  1. Hi everyone, I am looking for a supplier for scalloped trim for chaps and purses. With and without dots. Also, leather fringe would be good too. Not Swede, I have that. Any supplies out there for these? I am in Arizona.

  5. Hi everyone! I'm Micaela, also known in internet circles as Dia or Crystallink. I am very much a newcomer to the world of leathercraft, having only been tinkering with the medium for a few months. I am mainly a character artist/illustrator, but I also love dabbling in other crafts and mediums (watercolor painting and making, hand sewing, a bit of knitting, clay sculpting and even some doll customization). Leathercraft was one thing I at first hesitated to get into because of how expensive it can get. But I was also drawn to how versatile the medium is, and all the beautiful items I've seen people made. After buying my first box of scrap leather and tinkering with it with my beginner tool set for a good while, I think I can safely say that I want to hone my skills and work my way up to doing larger projects. So far I've been starting out with rings, since they are the smallest and most simple thing I found I could tinker with without feeling bad about wasting large amounts of leather, and I discovered they're way more comfortable for me to wear than metal rings. I ended up going a bit crazy and creating a lot of them. I decided to sell most of them on my Ko-fi shop, so you can take a peek there to see what I've done so far: https://ko-fi.com/crystallink/shop If you're interested in my digital illustration, please check out my portfolio! (I'm a freelancer, so if anyone needs a mascot or a character based logo for thier business, or artwork for personal uses, I'd be interested in working with you!) https://crystallinkcreations.com Recently I've decided to step things up and try making a bracelet. This is my first one. It was done a bit hastily, so I know the crafstmanship looks a bit crappy. I'm hoping to better hone my skills and make these look more professional!

  7. Hello everyone. It never occured to me to look for a dedicated online forum when I first started out on this little adventure. My story starts the same way many of your do too - A couple of years ago, I was in need of a new belt. I was usually content with the store-bought belts that I had been wearing all my life until I saw a guy with a genuine veg tan leather belt and asked him about it. I told my brother about what I had seen and the conversation that ensued, a week later a beginners leatherworking tool kit arrived with a dozen belt blanks and a note from my brother telling me to have at it and see what I could do. Those first few belts were a disaster; horrible dye jobs. The edges were nowhere near nice enough to show anyone. I rushed through the first batch rather than taking my time to get them right. I have since slowed down. Each step it taken with care. As my skills improved, so have my tools. My most recent project is a new wristband for my watch as they don't make them long enough to go around my wrists.
  8. Hey' all My name is Nelson Agaba from Uganda. I am new to this community. I am a leather expert with 10+years experience in leather tanning and tannery operations. I have always loved leather crafting and I have just ventured into small leather goods manufacturing and footwear making. I want to seek all help and assistance from experts in ladies sandal making, wallets, belts and leather bags. I have 2 post beds, and a skiving machine and all the necessary hand tools but no experience in this. Any help (videos, patterns, etc to help me get started) will be highly appreciated. Thanks all.
  9. Hello everyone! I am in search of a pattern for a quick draw knife pattern. Anyone help is appreciated. Thanks for the post!
  10. Hi, I work for a company outside of the US that manufactures products that are made from leather. Up until now we used to by the processed leather after it was dyed and now we are looking into doing the process in house . We have tried a few ways of dying the skin black and met with companies in Europe but didnt reach the result we were looking for. We were told that there is alot of companies in the US the specializes in these kind of things and have a lot of knowledge. Since we are a big company we are looking to work and purchase on a large scale once we find the right company to work with. If anyone has any insight on this topic or know any good companies in the state that specializes in this that we can meet with, I would really appreciate it if they could send me in the right direction. Thanks!

  16. For the past year, I've been playing around with Sheridan style carving. Indeed, this style of carving is rather ambitious but I'm getting more familiar with it and creating some pretty nice pieces. That being said, I feel as if my swivel knife is holding me back from progressing further with my works. I'm currently using an old Tandy craftool knife and looking for an upgrade. I've been looking online for a good, reasonably priced blade and I'm currently considering the Barry King knife and the higher-priced Leather Wranglers SK-B brass swivel knife. I wanted to ask if the SK-B brass's 135$ price tag is justified or should I go with the budget friendly Barry King knife?
  17. Hello, I am new to this forum and very excited! I create custom browbands for horses, but due to Brexit, I've had to start looking for new suppliers again. The quality of the leather is very important to me, as well as the delivery timeframe. So I am wondering if any of you know where I can find empty channel, color or non color padded browbands, ready to use. I've alreday found http://www.horsefashionshop.de/ (do not like the leather quality as it seems very hard and painted) and https://www.kkressing.boutique/stirnriemen-rohlinge/ (very nice leather work and great quality, but not much on stock,...) . Any of you familiar with this and could help me out? Thank you so much!!!
  18. Post American (USA) veg tan & latigo suppliers here
  19. I’m getting ready to start making belts. I have looked at numerous leathers still have not found exactly what I’m looking for. Money is not as much of a concern as quality. I want a single ply belt in the 9 ounce range that is super smooth on the back, scratch resistant, and won’t crack when bent. What leather do you use? I tried splenda BOM leather; it was everything I wanted except for the fact that it cracked when bent. I feel like there has to be something that meets these qualities.
  20. I dyed one of my best saddles with fiebings pro dye dark brown, and it turned almost black. I’m so sad and it looks hideous. Is there any way to lighten, bleach it or take the dye out? I would love to save it ❤️❤️❤️

  22. Here’s a last minute Christmas gift that was sent out. Wallet is constructed of 3oz black buttero with black 0.45mm waxed linen thread spaced at 3.38mm and black Uniters edge paint... I got this side of leather on sale from Rocky Mountain so I wasn’t able to have it split.. I usually prefer 1.0/1.5oz leather to keep the bulk down but I did a lot of skiving where I could to keep this project as thin as possible. Questions comment and critiques always welcome. Happy holidays !! Thanks for looking
  23. I started making belts when I was 17, back in the late 60's. I started with just any old Tandy veg tan. At some point I found a leather, French Butt, that was lovely to work with and had a nice hand. It didn''t dry out and made beautiful belts. I have made belts off and on since, but three years ago started a small custom shop and I have yet to find a very nice quality veg tan leather like that French Butt. Does anyone else remember that or is there anything available today that might compare? Thanks for your help in advance. I live in New Mexico and local sources are few and far between.
  24. Hi, I found this Durkop-Adler 367 sewing machine available for pick up locally, but I don’t know anything about it. I need a sewing machine that can sew multiple layers of 4-5 oz leather. I currently use various models of Consew RB-1 to RB-5, would this model work on that? Also the asking price is $1500, is that a reasonable price for it? I can’t seem to find a lot of information online. Thank you in advance!
  25. Dear All, I want to know which material and machine do factories use to seal and coat the leather edges with a thick rubbery coat? I don't think it is Giardini, or Fiebings or Stahl or United or any of these edge coats, because I compared those to the rubbery edge coat I have on many bags and they are not the same.......I also don't think in mass production of bags they will waste time applying 3 or 4 layers of these edge coats..... I think it is a synthetic material... It could be the one in the attached photo but I don't know what is it? BTW this material is damn good and sustainable. Can anyone help me please.
