Haha, yeah that was just a fortunate coincidence! The "rivets" along the top are actually plaster, like most frames with decorations like that. (the exception being hardwood frames that sometimes have everything carved into the surface) Thanks! I realized in retrospect that they look like a cat peeking sideways over the edge, so I made sure to place the rivets in a spot that didn't make them look like eyes. No real set purpose for it, although a quilter told me that the box she bought from me would be used to hold all the tiny thread scraps as she's working on a quilt so they wouldn't keep getting everywhere until she got around to throwing them out. Thanks!

Nice decorative addition! -
That looks the way veg tan acts when it's not sealed at all, was there a wax buffed in to the leather?

Couple of bits from me

Very clean looking work there! The hardware sets it off nicely too. -
I swear I had been mulling over making a box by riveting it before I saw Retswer's at http://leatherworker.net/forum/topic/76655-riveted-rivet-box/ , that being said I did take some tips from what was said on his thread and made sure to skive my flaps down. This is a pretty small box, less than 2" x 2". The lid is actually wood from mitered frames with a scrap of leather glued onto the bottom. I think it turned out pretty well for a mach 2 (mach one turned out to not be feasible)

Vertical type PC bag
Grey Drakkon replied to ArildS's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Fantastic use of contasting colors to make the outside really pop! I'm a little bummed about the interior color, mustart yellow doesn't mesh well with that fantastic leather, it would be fun to see something like a bright color interior, but if that's what you had then that's what ya got. Overall though I really like the shape and visual feel of it! -
First airbrush attempt

The effect IS subtle, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It will probably look awesome the more it ages. -
That's some pro work!

Thanks! I'm telling ya, those were the NICEST splits I've ever cut in my life, I managed to impress myself. Braiding the 5 strand isn't actually much different than doing the 3 strand. For the 3, you divvy the strips up two on one side and one on the other, flip the bottom through the gap, then braid 1,2,3, flip, 1,2,3, flip. With the 5 strand it's the same, except three strips on the left and two on the right, then flip through the gap and braid 1,2,3,4,5, flip and repeat. It's only towards the end that it starts getting hairy by getting all self-knotted. Flattery gets you everywhere. ;D Question answered! Got them from this guy: , In fact, I wound up with an extra #67 stamp by accident that I'm willing to sell for the price I got it at, with US shipping cost added instead of overseas. It's not the full set like I used for the bracelets though (that comes in three sizes, plus a combo stamp).

So how best to put brand new tooling stamps through their paces? Well for me, leather cuffs! Been having loads of fun with my brand new scale set, and with seeing how different colors look with them. Another neat one that shows off some of the metallic sheen I've put on it, plus a horween 5 strand for fun.

Thanks for sharing the process!

O_O I swear, there must be a brain wave going through the air or something, because for the past couple of days I was thinking about making a box by riveting it together! (I've been making boxes by saddle stitching them) Great job and great way to use up scrap while organizing your area, which organizes it even more. ^_^

Damn! That's a super nice box. How did you do the hinges, leather straps? Or is it just that one belt?- 19 replies

Nice way of working with the leather you had, that will stand out on the wall for sure.

So I've been going crazy the last month making garb and other sundries for the SCA event I went to, which means lots of leftover scraps. I hate throwing anything away, so I came up with a little pouch made of a scrap of leather for the base and a band of linen from something or other. The bead is one I made in lampworking, works pretty well as a stop. Thinking on it, I realized that a good way to use up torn up jeans is to cut off the bottoms and use those as the walls of a sack, just turn down the raw edge and make a new hem, sew on a leather bottom and add a cord! Minimal sewing and you used up some stuff that might have gotten thrown out.

Really nice! One thing that would make it even better is to make the background a bit darker behind it, that would make it pop even more!

My First Leather Hat
Grey Drakkon replied to Bodean's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Hah, well I'm in the hand sewing camp myself. If you're planning on cranking them out then a machine may be called for, but I like the character hand sewing gives. -
