Shave kit
battlemunky replied to farns005's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I really like your sign post where the initials go. Other than a little bit of antiquing missing in a few spots, that looks spot on to Don Gonzalez' design. Did you resize anything or is that as large as the ones Don makes? -
Hello and welcome! Feel free to post pictures! We'd love to see your work

Looks pretty good!

Switch to water or gum trag or beeswax? Tons of other stuff to burnish with aside from saddle soap.

My take on the Dopp Kit
battlemunky replied to YinTx's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Very nice @YinTx. A dopp kit is on my list and I'm hoping it turns out as nice as that. I'll use some 3/4 oz HO for the baggy parts and for the sides I will likely use the 8/9 oz Craftman Oak I got from Tandy when it was cheap, if I tool it. -

God luck and good job. I have just gotten my first few commissions and I WAYYYYY undersold myself. I won't be doing it again. I turned out some pretty stellar work, imo, and let it go for almost what I had in it in materials Still being new, I almost don't feel worthy to ask more for it, so I cheated myself but my customer got a wallet that'll last him a good 10 years or more. Hopefully it'll come back in referrals? Please let us know how it goes and post lots of pics along the way. Tack/harnesses intimidate the heck out of me and I'd appreciate it immensely to see a build as it's happening.

A couple of arm guards out of exotics

I really like your style too. It has a primitive look about it. Not sure if the hieroglyphs make me lean that way but I really like it. They look flawlessly executed aside from aesthetics. -
Elephant Billfold

Looks pretty good! I just tried some bison and didn't really care for it. I need to try some other stuff before I consider myself a veg-cow only kinda guy. -
Thanks for sharing!

My only critique is that I need to work harder. A LOT harder. Another super clean and well made piece of work Nate, or 5R -

Airmail envelope purse
battlemunky replied to Prusty's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
That looks really nice! How do you do the alternating color stitching? Well, I know you use two different threads of different colors but how do you hide the knot and do you backstitch or something? I tried it the other day and couldn't figure out how to start it without it going to hell on me. -

Regarding mallets @taketothetrees, I only have rawhide and have a large and a small. I use the small (12 oz I think) for most tooling work and the large (16 oz) for those "one hit" type stamps and for setting ez rivets and snaps. I also have a 24 oz ball peen hammer for brad rivets. There are some great youtube videos on hammer vs. mallet. vs. maul. Each has it's own pros and cons and there is a ton of subjectivity so like thread, it is a "feel" thing and you don't really know which you like until you try some and on some of these items, the admission price can be a bit prohibitive. I'd love to have a Barry King round maul but I don't know if I'm ready to have a really pretty $70 bill sitting on my bench not being used, so I haven't sprung for one just yet.
