  1. That IS a welt! Looks heavy enough to kill a bloke if it fell out of a tree!
  2. That knife was definitely worth the wait. Great detail as well. Its a bit hard to see how your stitching came up in the 1st pic (before you restitched it), but it looks a little inconsistent. Consistency will come with practice. Overall, a great protector for the blade.
  3. First thing you should do when posting pics of knife sheaths is ... show the knife as well as the sheath. Then maybe show the back, edges and close up of the stitching. Your sheath looks rudimentary but functional at 1st glance, but I think the stitch length could be shorter and the holes could be smaller IMHO. On something like this, I would use 4.0mm (approx. 6 stitches per inch) with 1.0mm thread. Did you use a welt to protect the thread?
  4. You seem to have nailed it pretty well with the side you have done so far. Its just the turn that is causing you grief. It will come.
  5. I am guessing somebody who actually knows something will be along soon.
  6. Thank you for the correct information. I will pass on the flaming.
  7. Purely from the point of view of somebody who knows very little about braiding ... I would say you need to revisit the previous hole one more time (that's the hole with 3 laces already through there).
  8. I am thinking the back piece, which includes the flap, is 2 layers of leather. There appears to be a join along the bottom edge.
  9. Pics of what you have done so far would be a great help.
  10. I have seen some people advise caution on using magnets as a closer on phone cases. Apparently the magnet can affect the screen sometimes. I am also wondering if the magnet might cause an issue with the SD card, internal memory or the sim-card.
  11. Some body showed me recently, how to remove a small piece of lace from the threaded hole when it breaks off. Slightly heat the needle about half inch down from the thread end. He said the damaged lace will screw itself out ... when he tried it, it went off like a .22 cal pistol shot. Apparently that usually doesn't happen, but it was effective anyway.
  12. Should be about 40 - 50% cheaper. The Aussie dollar is about 54pence to the dollar right now.
  13. No project in mind at the moment for these letters, I just thought they looked good for belts or monogramming. Price is much better than I thought they would be, but the real-deal would depend on what I can get them for, landed in Australia.
  14. Hi there Crawf, I have heard of Packers, but never dealt with them. Most of my purchases to date, have been through Birdsall Leather, or Marino Leather in Cairns for toad and some exotics.
  15. It looks a bit like rag or sponge work. It might take bit of imagination and some testing to see what different textures you can get using different swipes or drags across the surface will leave. As a suggestion, ball up different cloth, paper or plastic materials then dab, drag and swirl away. Please post your results. I am sure lots of people would like to see what you can come up with.
  16. I bought a heap of 2nd-hand gear on the weekend, so I am now halfway thru filling my 2nd drawer. Its interesting to see the different dyes, coatings, waxes and oils that people use. I guess it's time to see if I have doubles of any bottles or jars. Maybe I can reduce the space taken up, by pouring 2 into 1.
  17. Hmmm ... no Tandy within 3000kms, so whilst they look good, I will get by without them. I would prefer to see them in front of me before outlaying the bucks to buy a heap of the letters to cover most possibilities.
  18. Absolutely the tool you have. All 3 of mine work perfectly. Each to their own. If you can use the more expensive model, and its within budget, go for it. Of course, that model pictured could not be used on something with tight corners, like some holsters, but it might work great for a large run of belts.

    Hello

*sigh ... closer to the only Tandy Australia store, Birdsall Leather, Eastcoast Leather, Marino Exotics, Leffler Leather etc etc etc than I am ...
  20. You can't forget the sandwich! I hope its fully loaded! Ohh yeah ... nice job on the case.

    Hello

Hi there @k8k8. Where are you based? There's a few Aussies hereabouts, and everybody just takes things as they come, passing along knowledge and techniques. If you need a hand with something, where to buy supplies in your area etc ... you have definitely found a great resource here.
  22. I have very little waste that goes in the rubbish bin. When I cut out a heap of items, the lace work of leather left behind is used for practice stamping, dye testing, swivel knife practice, making small welts, sanding to make leather dust (add to PVA to fill small gaps) etc etc.
  23. I think it would be difficult to know from just a single pic. Maybe it would be clearly evident if you could look inside the case. Maybe the backing piece is double thickness, one thickness of brown and one of blue glued rough side to rough side, then the front face glued on around 3 edges (one yellow/one green etc). Alternatively, maybe the blue or green piece is glued to the backing and just big enough to fill the window, then the front face is attached.
  24. I use an edge paint roller that has a brass cone where the brush would be on a regular applicator, cost is around $6 - $7US from memory, ordered online, just Google it on eBay. *On 2nd thought, for $100+, are we talking about totally different items?
