For doing all my edges, I use a roller brush. Its got a brass cone-shape instead of a proper brush. Dip it into your coating, and apply it along the edge. Easy peasy, no drips, runs or uneven edges. Disclaimer: This is how I use it, but I have recently been told I should be filling the handle with the edge coat, and allow it to run out onto the brass cone assembly. Mehhh! My way suits me fine.

@HardenGoods Nice workshop. It might be different in real life, but from the pic, it appears you could do with a better light over your sewing machine. I see you have your helper beside you. All in all, a good set-up.

I totally agree with @YinTx, but I would go so far as to say you have so many inventions, tools, foresight, so much leather and ability many people are envious of (me included).

When you amaze yourself

WOW! Exceptional job. I like the lacework ... and the croc ... and the strap ... and the colours you used! Just WOW! -
Knife Sheaths
Rockoboy replied to Bawarrior's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I have done the same. I used a toad-skin inlay, using embroidery thread (because its all I had in that colour) on a sheath for a $3 knife ... just to see if I could do it. The system worked, but my skill level was way off the mark. -
Greetings from the North Island of New Zealand!

There's a bloke in UK who bought up a heap of new old-stock from some place that was closing down. I found him on eBay, and I have bought a heap from him. -
Gotta keep things rolling along, and there's nothing better than a couple beers to help with that occasionally.

Knife Sheaths
Rockoboy replied to Bawarrior's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
All of your sheaths look really good. Do you use welts? I am also wondering about the benefit of the inlay on the back, where nobody will see it. -
I agree with BM. I would have a melamine full sheet 8' x 4' cutting table in the middle of the floor, with lockable wheels so it can be rolled aside if required.

Orders to ship

I totally agree, there appeared to be more in the background than was apparent. My apologies for the hijack, that was motivated by an appreciation of your excellent work. -
I think the same newsflash had the name of the national javelin-catching champion.

Shot shell bag for sporting clays
Rockoboy replied to corkscrew's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I like the different textures above and below the tree branch. Just a couple questions ... what is the weight of 75+ 12G shotgun shells? How will this case stand up to carrying that sort of weight, or does the case become a storage box (not a carry-case) when it's full? -
Leather Duffel Bag
Rockoboy replied to BattleAx's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Too help with this possibility, I would always pass the handle straps right under the bag, so there is less worry about the handles coming loose if the bag is overloaded. (Personal experience from carrying an overloaded school-bag many many moons ago). -

While I do not agree with his point of view on most/any thing(s) he says, he has the right to make comments (so long as he does not become abusive). The rest of the people on this site, have the right to ignore him. "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death, your right to say it". Evelyn Beatrice Hall Disclaimer: I have taken option B, 'The right to ignore this person'. -
To help keep the thread in my project cleaner, I use a longer length of thread than I need for the stitch-line. I usually find its the first 1 - 2feet of thread that gets dirtiest, so I make sure that section is cut away when I finish sewing and it leaves the cleaner thread in the project. For the stitch holes, where possible, I glue the seams together, then I use a stitching chisel to punch the holes right through.

You really excel at being obnoxious AND wrong in the same paragraph! Maybe handwriting is not your thing, but some of us still have that ability. So what if it is a niche product or even a scarp of leather with a practice piece on it. The finished piece is still far better than anything I have seen presented by @RusticLeatherShop. "O beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the 'green-eyed-monster' which doth mock the meat it feeds on." Shakespeare. -
Inventive way to solve a problem, and a very nice job. I like it.

Come on man! Pics or it didn't happen. Them's the rules.

Yes, the different colours indicate different grade of abrasive. I have been told by a lot of people, always use the green/blue colour for stropping all leatherwork knives including swivel knives.

I am pretty sure you answered your own question at the time you asked that question. You used a tool to do a great job to achieve the effect you wanted. You got repeatable results, safely, at a great cost. What else can a person ask for? Now ... where can I borrow a scroll saw ...

Not my choice of edge finish, but if that's what he wants, it's his project. @VabaX As for your assessment of some different glue products, I use PVA and contact cement, and sometimes double sided tape. (I've never used superglue on leather, but I have it there, with the accelerator if I need a fast set-off).I agree with you, that it depends on the job, the person doing the job, what products are available and probably a few other variables

The main problem in posing a question such as this is, each different area or country has a different cost of living, wages structure etc. I earn $22+ per hour plus penalties for nightshift, weekends, public holidays etc. In some countries $22 is a weeks wages. There is no way to compare what I would pay for a pair of shoes, smartphone case or a loaf of bread etc, with what you would pay. Even after considering different countries, there are obvious class differences within each country. Some person who will pay $500US for a pair of shoes could be standing beside when I pay $3.00 for a loaf of bread. I would never pay $500 for a pair of shoes, but he would buy the bread for $3.00. Possibly in your country, the $500USD shoes are still $500USD, but your bread may be $1.00 or less, so there is no comparison between economies. ( I have seen this exact scenario in a foreign country). As I said previously, if you want to know what something is worth, ask your peers and customers in your own country, and also people who are close to your economical situation.
-
Impossible to estimate what I might be willing to pay for these boots from looking at your pic. Could be anywhere from $20USD to $100USD in my country and bearing in mind our economy. In your country, that cost might be a months wages, I have no idea. Once again, you have posed a question that is unanswerable.

Excellent job, something I have never even contemplated. I read somewhere that getting the eyes right is the hardest part. -
Rifle buttstock pattern and type of leather
Rockoboy replied to AJ2018's topic in Patterns and Templates
Nice job overall. I like your stitching. I think, maybe the cartridge loops look better if the were dyed the same light brown colour as the base leather.
