    While not technically a gift, here is a Christmas card I did for an old girlfriend that I recently re-connected with. My carving skills have atrophied badly in the years since my shop burned, and Olde English might have been a bit ambitious for a first go. But I think she will like it, and I'm fairly happy with it as well.

    I pull the right thread through, and back. Then the left through and pull tight. I think you are over thinking it. Just do it the same every time for consistent stitches.

    And if it IS too fuzzy/shaggy, it can be sanded to get rid of the loose fibers. I've also 'pasted' the back with Fiebing's Antique Stain. Not the paste or the gel. I haven't used them so I can't speak to that.

    SnoSeal is a waterproofing for boots, it is supposed to penetrate DEEPLY into the leather to keep water out. I would keep it completely away from any project that is not Camping/Hunting/Work/Outdoor oriented.

    I use about 4-5 inches of free tail. I've never pulled the thread out of a needle.

    I used a 'French Curve' for that. Play around with it and find what pleases your eye.

    Well, for one thing, I only sew with linen or hemp. I won't use plastic thread.

    I have never tied the thread to the needle. Nor have I ever used the 'pierce' technique. I just thread it and sew with it, never had an issue.

    I've had 2 0f the Tandy ones. One burned in the wildfire that wiped us out and the other is hanging on my pegboard right now. The first one was almost 25 years old. They work just fine. You can spend much more, but you won't GET much more.

    I use the cheap wooden hammer that comes in beginner sets from Tandy. Sand the faces nice and smooth, stain it if you wish, and hammer away.

    Same here. And if it is sold as 'Buffalo' that is what you will be getting. BISON is generally labeled as such. The only thing I can think of, that would be even close to what you are describing would be the Highlander leather that Tandy sold years ago. Chrome tan about as thick as saddle skirting. But they haven't offered it in about 8 years. If you were over here I would suggest brain tanned bison or moose.

    I always use waxed thread, no matter the weight of leather. I HAVE unwaxed threads, but I wax them before use.

    Not necessarily. It can have a firm to very firm hand. I have a couple sides as firm as any veg tan. You might look into 'milled' veg tan. It is tumbled as part of the process and gives it a softer hand.
