  1. It is caused by the stretch of the leather. I know of no way to stop it.
  2. Plastic??? Really??
  3. Sunlight is in no way needed to "dry" skins. Air movement is what is needed.
  4. First, I don't do anything Metric. But when I get ready to start a project I just look at the leather, judge it's firmness, or lack of, and choose it that way. Those numbers really have no meaning to me. I suppose if I ordered leather sight unseen it might be a guideline.
  5. Cover them in cornmeal, it will draw out a lot of the oil.
  6. What TYPE of leather are you using? Is it veg tanned? Chrome?
  7. You might try Oxalic acid. However, IF it removes the stain, you might have the opposite problem of the spots being lighter than the surrounding leather. Try it in a small, inconspicuous area to see. Here is a link to a thread about it. Oxalic Acid And Cleaning Leather - Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners. - Leatherworker.net
  8. It is out there, but VERY expensive!!!! Bridlework: A Step by Step Guide by Robert H. Steinke (2010-05-03): Robert H. Steinke: 9780615395586: Amazon.com: Books

  11. My granddaughter tipped a bottle of red. My tooling slab looks like a sacrificial alter.
  12. I am REALLY glad I stopped reading this thread on the 2nd page!
  13. I don't DIP anything except chips. Everything is done with a dauber or a rag. I don't have the space or resources to have a "dip area".
  14. Another tip is to cover one side with heavy paper or light cardboard. Line up one point and gradually remove the paper as you line up your edges. I learned that trick installing Formica. An accidental contact with that stuff is a major PITA.
  15. After 45 years of carpentry I have never worried about saw/sanding dust. I have heard that I might develop an allergy to walnuts from working with the wood and inhaling the dust. But I have never liked walnuts, so I'm not concerned. In all those years the worst I've had to deal with is getting slightly stuffy.
  16. It doesn't sound like anything I would ever consider.
  17. Check with Maverick Leather in Bend, Or. They have a pretty wide selection and may have what you are looking for. Maverick Leather (maverickleathercompany.com)
  18. There was a bill passed to prohibit the TRANSPORT of horses for slaughter. It does not stop morons from turning them loose to fend for themselves however.
  19. The contact cement should be flexible enough, but once they are stitched together it doesn't matter.
  20. I'd rather live with the spiders than the flies. The same with rattlesnakes, better them than mice.
