  1. Yeah I want a power skiver & strap cutter, but just cant afford them. I recently decided to order a cobra class 4 sewing machine & it's going to wipe out my fun money i have stashed. Yeah i watch guys that have been using this style skiver for years & they make it look soo easy to do. I know i wont have the required skill/ technique to use it like they do. Thanks for the info & advice.
  2. Ok guys & gals, I got this swivel knife from James Linnell, & here is my 1st cuts with it. It's a really nice dual bearing swivel knife. I also got 2 other blades. A 1/4" hollow ground & a 1/4" angled. I'll have to try the other 2 blades & see which blade I like the most.
  3. Ok thanks. No when I thin a belt in the buckle bend area I thin it out from the buckle bend to the end of the belt. Basically I thin it from the buckle bend to the end of the belt. Roughy I thin 4-6" of the buckle end of the belt.
  4. I used these amazon chisels, they have been good chisels & I believe they are spaced at 4mm. They are a diamond chisel. I bought a high dollar set from tandy & they bent the 1st time I used them trying to stamp thru some thick leather.
  5. Thanks I know i was using too thick of leather, but i had a itching to try my hand at making a wallet.
  6. Yeah I know it was overkill on the leather selection, but it's all I had & I wanted to make a wallet to show off. It's like the duty belts I make, probably way overkill on the leather. But they should last & not stretch or sag.
  7. Lmao I've been spending it on leather tools. I started 8 years ago with a amazon basic leather starter kit & trying now to buy some name brand stuff. The good stuff is way more expensive. Thank you, I'm not going to lie, I have good days & bad days when it comes to basket weave stamping.
  8. Beautiful belt! Love your tool work. Looks nice!
  9. I thought with this tool you could thin your leather to the thickness needed for a given project? Basically I thought with this tool you could thin say 10/12 OZ leather to 8/9 OZ leather? Will this tool do this? Or is there some other tool that I would need instead of this? Sorry for all the questions, I'm a amateur. Thanks.
  10. Thanks everyone. Do you guys & gals think 346 thread is too heavy & should I've used a larger spread stitching chisel? Thanks.
  11. Also forgot to add the card slots are lined with some high price plastic fabric material. Lmao I cant think of the name. I'm wanting to say tyvek, but I think I'm wrong on the name.
  12. Well guys & gals here is my 1st wallet. Its probably a bit overkill on the leather, but it's what I had on hand. The outside basket weave panel is 6/7 OZ, then all the inside panels are 3/4 OZ. It has 8 total card slots. It is all saddle stitched with 346 thread. What's your guys & gals thoughts. Thanks for looking.
  13. Thanks I appreciate the info. It did have a lot of adjustments, they were long slots as you mentioned. I believe you could adjust the roller as well. It looks similar to the weaver one, that's like $400. I was hoping to get by with this for a bit, till I can afford something better. I was more worried about the blade quality. I know it could be hit or miss on quality & it will probably make me cuss trying to adjust it & kinda fine tune it.
  14. Yeah I make lined belts & I think something like this would be great for the bend in the belt for the buckle. I use 9/10 oz leather then line it with 3/4 oz leather. Sometimes I line with a 5/6 oz leather & at this point the belt is thick & needs thinned down in the buckle area. I was thinking something like this would save me a bunch of time when skiving. Thanks.
  15. I'm just curious if any of you guys & gals has a manual skiver like this or has used 1 like it? Is something like this worth owning? Or is something like this junk? I got a couple safety skivers & a couple Japanese skiving knives, but I dont like them. Can you professionals give me a lil advice on something like this. Thanks any & all help will be appreciated.
  16. I'd say if you like it, & got the funds, buy it.
  17. Ok thanks everyone. I guess I just need to get creative & make something out of them. Maybe make a set of coasters for sure. Thanks I never thought about that. I do have 2 bellies over a 1/4" thick.
  18. Guys & gals I buy quite a few veg tan sides every year. Usually 4-6 sides per year, What do you guys do with the bellies you cut off the sides? Most bellies I got are pretty soft & supple I'm curious what to make or do with them. What do you guy & gals do with them? Thanks.
  19. Thanks a bunch. Lol more stuff to buy. But that looks like high quality accessories. Yeah I'm going to buy all the aftermarket accessories that company offers. Their stuff looks better quality than what's ships with the machine.
  20. Yeah I never thought of stapling belt keepers. That would be way quicker. I always skivied the ends on a long taper & glued, then saddle stitched it.
  21. Yeah I'm glad I got a big pile of scrap leather, glad I did not toss my scraps. I'm sure I'm going to need lots of practice with the cobra class 4.
  22. Here is what you need. They offer 3 different attachment styles as well as 3 different finishes. You will have to make your stud attachment plate. Like I said, they make 3 different attachment styles. 1 style is threaded for a screw & the other to styles are a threaded stud style. Little suckers are expensive at $9 each.
  23. Yeah there is nothing that will replace a saddle stitch. It looks soo good when you nail it perfectly. Lol I still have a hiccup every once in a while saddle stitching. Lmao sometimes my stitch will have 1 or 2 stitches that change direction. I've read in a few places the Cobra class 4 likes to break a foot off of the presser feet occasionally. Idk how often or what caused it. Thanks I got time to think about things & research. As soon as New Year day gets over with. I'll be ordering the machine.
  24. No I havent tried sage brush yet. I've been using the minwax wood hardner/stabilizing liquid. After leaving it in that stuff for a week & then curing a block of wood, the wood doubles, or maybe triples in overall weight.
  25. Yep as others had mentioned. Reverse engineer that sucker by taking it apart & use it as a pattern. Dont skimp on your seat foam padding. Good seat foam will probably cost $40-$60 for a 18" x 18" square.
