I bought this from a jumble sale for £1, and I would like to restore it. I am interested in cleaning it and fixing the whipping at the corners. I could also replace all of it, if necessary. Also happy to have any other advice! As far as I have been able to tell it seems to be made for the the tourist market sometime from the 1920s to 1940s, but happy to be told otherwise! I'm not sure whether is is suede or leather, the main part of is suede like but the embossed parts are more like leather.

Hey leathercrafters of reddit! I'm a complete beginner in leatherworking and my end goal is to make a cute purse for my spouse, watch straps and a dopp kit for myself. I have watched videos and I'm reading about the basics, and I want to set my foot in there. I would greatly appreciate tips, tricks, advice, maybe even links? I have a budget of about 200$ to begin with and hopefully make it with the purse, or at least. In terms of tools, I only own rulers a cutting mat and small knives (like x-acto knives). In geographical terms I'd rather use European suppliers to aid with lower shipping costs to me. To be specific, she likes leather products from the big brands, with finishes like the Saffiano, Epi and Epsom leathers. I know it's standardized leather and I might have to put a good penny on it by itself? I'd like to make a lightweight bag, yet have it hold shape and stiffness. I want to add a lining too, but I went lost in all the options. the watch straps I'd like are simple, yet I want them to be comfortable to wear in terms of material that lays on the skin. I'd like to make a dopp kit that js waterproof (or at least splash proof) lined with something soft. I know I'd need a mallet, pricking irons, needles, thread, probably edge dying and finishing supplies, and probably some more tools and supplies. Is there a type of leather, supply, thread, tool etc to avoid? Anything I can cheap out on? Things that are worth the investment? I'd appreciate any and all inputs! Thanks in advance!

I got comissioned to make a couple more purses. One is what I call whisky brown with a bit of cinnamon. It's goat leather with .6 mm Tiger in mid brown thread. It has a top zipper as well as a front zippered pocket. The 2nd on is a navy blue goat skin with .6mm Tiger thread in white. It has a top zipper and an open front pocket. Critiques are welcome as always.

Hi everyone, I wanted to share that I have many new buckles for sale in my ETSY store https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/ReliquariaMedieval . These are all authentic historical shapes, but the best part is, they are not the kind of designs you can find in the average craft store. I've been lucky enough to have a couple of fantasy armourers work with me and the buckles (and armour -wink!) look great. I've had some questions about the quality of these items - they are solid brass/bronze (depending on the amount of tin), very heavy and strong. They are cast pieces so each one is unique and you will see slight imperfections from the casting process. If there ever is a problem, I will always replace the broken piece (but of over 600 sales I've only had one broken piece). I would be honoured if you would consider using some of my items in your designs. -Ellaire Here's a couple more.

Hello, I'm looking to see how much it would cost to have a purse remade with higher quality materials. I'm more interested in longevity than price. Photos of the purse can be found here. The purse has 3 compartments, with a passport pocket in the front. If it would help, I could send the current purse to be deconstructed for pattern use. My email is Set rat zka(at)gmail(dot)com. Thanks for looking!

Just looking to get some feedback and see what the general consensus is. I finshed this bag friday after having it kicking around in my head for quite a while. I started off with the smooth side of the leather showing on the first side but then decided i liked it better this way so I took everything apart and started over. It has a zipper closure but I didnt really like it exposed so i added the flap cover and has a simple red bandana lining inside. I don't have any "fancy" leather working tools so everything is done by hand, including cutting the fringe with scissors...not the most fun thing I've ever done to be honest. I won't lie I've been posting some of my stuff elsewhere but there doesn't seem to be much interaction when asking for feedback, so please feel free to comment. Thanks

Ning Bags for the win! My wife's family has an heirloom, a Masonic sword with a leather carrying case, about 100 years old or so, belonging to a great-grandfather. When it came to my brother in law last year, after a death in his family, I was asked to restitch the leather case. The original thread was likely cotton or linen, and had nearly all deteriorated. So I matched the original thread with some Ritza synthetic thread (no reason to keep the "authentic" thread type, since it's not really a "historic" piece), and re-stitched the entire case. But there was turn lock on the case, which was missing the turning piece. I could not locate a match -- all the ones I could locate online (The Buckle Guy, Ohio Travel Bag, etc.) were 1 inch or larger, none 3/4 inch in width like this one. But today, on a random search, I struck gold, and I found the turn lock in the right size and the right color. The pieces will fit seamlessly in the current slots on the leather, and the case will be completely restored.

I'm looking for a supplier of small diameter rivets for leather of about 3/16" to 1/4" thickness. Also shorter ones for 1/8" thickness. Something with a clean head and finished crimp. Application is for a purse to support high stress points where several layers meet. I'd even consider paying for a custom product. Silverd

So this is my first attempt at making a bag of any sort. I’m actually really pleased with how it turned out. I’m calling this a prototype because I plan on making more with nicer leathers. While this looks pretty decent there’s quite a few scars on the leather and while it worked for this bag that’s not really the look I’m going for. Also I need to tweak the pattern a bit. And I need to make a strap just waiting on some leather to come in. The bag is made of 2.5/3.0oz European veg tan from Tandy. Stitched with twist 0.45 cream linen thread and I used some cheap 5mm pricking irons from Amazon. The liner is some sort of suede from an old jacket liner I believe (my aunt gave it to me when I told her I was making leather goods) I got the gold hardware from sav-more leather in Downtown LA. I’d really like to hear what you think or maybe offer some insight. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to glue the seams before sewing ( I didn’t ) also I forgot to undo the zipper A little bit before closed it up so that was a total pain trying to get the zipper open so I could flip it. Here’s a lot of pics =) Thanks for looking !

Hi! my mother and I have a precious (to us) handbag from a popular company that has been worn from years of use. I have tried and failed to find a replacement of similar style and color. It is a hot pink shoulder bag. I am looking for someone who would possibly be able to recreate this purse for me. I would mail you the original to work from. The lining is in wonderful condition, so I think you might be able to just use it as is unless it’s easier for you to create a new lining. email me if you’re interested. I can give you more info and I am interested in your pricing for such a project. alyssa dot holt 96 at gmail dot com

Fun little purse I made, for summer outings and concerts, it's supposed to be attachable on the belt also. I still have to make the strap detachable, did not have all the right hardware at the time. 2 mm leather for body, 1.4 for brown bits (including strap) and gusset. 3.85 spacing on pricking irons, 0.65 mm Wuta thread. Had fun with this gusset type, I really like the result. Feather was cut with the swivel knife by me, and painted by the fiancee. Hope you like it!

I was gifted a box of boot tops in trade for a purse made out of some of them earlier this year. I had been putting it off due to not having a machine capable of the task. Still don’t have the machine I need but I’m working on that. There is definitely a learning curve in bag building but I learned a few things in the process. All in all it turned out better than I had expected. All part of the purse are up-cycled from other items except the strip of veg tan around the bottom. Kinda nice to give something a new life. Everything was sewn on a Japanese singer 15 clone.

Does anyone have any experience with repairing ladies' purses? I've repaired like 5 purses in the last 3 weeks. Mostly by a referral by a shoe repair shop. If anyone has experience with this, what kind of method do you use for charging for repair? What kind of repairs do you do or NOT do and why. Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.

I made a few of these but a fair bit smaller in size just for cards a while ago, and got a request for a larger version so had a bash at doing just that. Still using some pretty fleshy 1.2mm cowhide, so the burnishing didn't go as well as I'd like, but the two-tone stitching still looks good. Adding the card pockets was easy enough, went for a thinner thread so it wouldn't show up so clearly, and actually I think I like this design a little better than the small ones. Any criticism or suggested changes would be welcome!

Second attempt at Messenger Bag for the boss. A lot of experiments with the first one, just a couple on this one. I tried some folded edges, and an interior piece with pockets for cel-phone, pen and keys. This one is a bit wider and deeper. Also went with a different closure than the first. The first one had a magnetic closure, and I hated it. The flap was fairly flexible, and lining up the two parts was difficult. I also stitched the 2-ply strap and flap on this one.

My daughters god mother is about to have her first baby! The one and only thing she asked for from us is a custom, handmade diaper bag! I have not even made a purse before. I told her I will give it a go. So this is where I request any and all help. I have no idea where to start! Is there any patterns for this? She did ask for something with shoulder strap and an outside pocket in the design.

New project in the works. Have a croc skin I want to make into a purse, but figured the smart thing to do is to make a prototype first out of some rather less expensive pebbled calf, lined with dark chocolate HAAS calf leather (thanks @nstarleather!). I’m heavily inspired by an, ahem, certain luxury goods brand, with hardware from Ohio Bag Supply (through hardware elf). Stitching irons are KS 3.0mm, thread is 532 light brown Lin Cable, and trying out the Renia Aquilim glue for the first time. Bag width is approx. 24cm. Will post more photos as I progress.
