TechSew 5100 vs Cobra Class 4 vs Cowboy CB4500
JLSleather replied to WiscoSam's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Stop down (Iowa) and get mine Cobra 4 premium plus I upgraded to "drop down" edge guide. A few years old, but I still have the original packaging and the flat top add-on table has never been out of the bubble wrap. Try it before you buy it. I do NOT use mine for single layer of thin leather, though I suppose you COULD. I've done it, but no more than I stitch on thin stuff it's just faster for me to sew a piece here and here by hand when it's thin. Retails at $3500 plus shipping - this one you can test and buy -- for $3000 I'll throw in the matching burnisher! https://leathermachineco.com/product/cobra-mp-burnisher/ Package retails today at about $4100. Bring LOTS of cash -- I have a good bit of veg tanned leather you could pick up VERY reasonable More pics available, but you're so close you should just come look. -

I almost agree ... but I've found quite a few more than 2 sizes There's the size the store sells you, because they KNOW people WILL come back to buy THEIR belts if they say "I'm skinny" even when you're not. People WILL bring their 35" waist in to buy a belt that says 32, and when that cheap junk wears out in a few months they'll be back to get another one. Problem for us comes in when that person gets tired of 4-6 month belts, comes for a REAL one, and wants the size marked on the ones he gets at Walmart. There's the size where a guy honestly wants a belt that fits, doesn't matter what the "size" is to him/her. So they give you their "real" clothing size. TWO problems here. First, that clothing size is often marked just like that Walmart belt.. not even close. I have jeans that say 34 that would FALL OFF without a belt, AND I have '34' jeans that are quite fitting. I usually wear "32" jeans, and they fit about the same as some "34" jeans. SECONDLY, EVEN IF you really measured 32, your BELT WOULD NEED TO BE MORE than that, because 1) the thickness of the leather, and 2) the thickness of the clothing it goes OVER. The thicker the leather, the longer belt needed. And of course, you have people who flat out lie (though it makes no sense to me) and people who tell you they measured wehn they did not. FOR A LONG TIME, I had a plan. If you're ordering a plain belt, I'll send you the size you asked for. Doesn' happen too often, since Amazon has belts in every color and style, faster and cheaper most of the time. If my belt doesn't fit, then yo RETURN IT in the SAME CONDITION and I'll swap it for one that fits now that you KNOW. BUT if you're ordering something I'm spending HOURS on, I'd send then a strap of leather THE SAME THICKNESS as the belt they'll be getting. Marked off every 1/4" like a tape measure. Tell them to run it through the jeans and tell me the number it lands on. Give the leather to the dog for a chewy, whatever. Then I found I had a good bit of time in that, and the shipping. So I started charging $10 for this strap (the shipping is $8). DONT buy a tooled belt, you're out $10 and I'm out the time and a strap of low-end leather (same hide as the good belt, but lower on the hide). DO buy a belt, and I'll take the $10 OFF the cost of the new belt order, so againg I"M paying for the "sizing strap". USUALLY worked, but still had people who got the strap, gave me a size, ordered teh wrong belt, then later admitted that they DIDN'T MEASURE because the new belt was a surprise gift and they didn't want to spoil the surprise. SO my conclusion is.... I DONT KNOW HOW to get people to give you the right size, even STILL. With local folks, we'd tell em just come in and we'll measure you. If you dont want me touching on you - because you're a girl, or a nutbag, or whatever -- let us know when you're coming and I'll have a girl here to do it for you... whatever. This WORKS, but only IF/WHEN you can get people to do it. BACK TO THE POINT... I dont mind Rocky's "fix" if you don't have far to go, but for me... I'm still thinking RANGER BELT.
-
If you only need an inch or two, DONT cut that belt. Turn it into a "ranger" style belt by adding "billets". I won't bore you to no end ... you can let us know if this is something that interests you and THEN we'll go into that. If you can cut the billets from the same hide, that's GOLD (but not required).

just leave the holster where it should be and "lose" some of the bullet loops.

The guy who took these photos said there were too many things wrong with the pics, like he was JUST BARELY willing to admit that he took them. The pro photo guys are a bit OCD ...

Pig has a visibly different GRAIN than cow. But this has nothing to do with how thick it is (or isn't), nothing to do with how soft it is (or not).... In fact, I'd dare say that you can't tell which is which BY FEEL. There are a GAJILLION ways to "make" suede leather, and that many variables makes it not possible to say what animal the skin is from "by feel". I will say that - as a rule and there certainly wold be an exception - that cow is FIRMER and LESS LIKELY TO STRETCH than a similarly treated pig skin. I personally DO NOT USE pig skin, because I DO NOT LIKE the grain in it. The only exception is I have used some sueded pig as padding for rifle slings, but only where glued and sewn down. As alternative to THIN linings that look good, I much prefer GOAT, which is also not the same grain as cow but FAR MORE resistant to stretch for the same weight (as a rule). Not to throw a wrench in, but are you DETERMINED to use a suede liner? That stuff is difficult to clean, traps "stuff" and "fuzz".... I wouldn't want it in a place I couldn't easily brush it out.

I use a rawhide mallet - and yeah, it deforms over time due to the impact. This is GOOD, as it means the damage isn't in teh TOOL. THE MOST important thing to learn in tooling is proper moisture in the leather. Too dry, no good impression. To wet, mushy impressions.

Glock 19 pancake
JLSleather replied to Hags's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Overall don't look so bad, though I'd want the stitching closer to the gun and the sewing holes maybe a size smaller. -
i WON'T be shopping with RJF. A few years back, Robert and I decided to check this out. He ordered a couple different cuts, and I ordered a couple other than what he ordered. NONE of it was acceptable. Lesson learned. There was another one, too.. same approach, same results. American.. something something ..?

You got a good start! And a new holster! Yer already aware ya got some learnin's 'n' practicin's ta do, so yer good ta go. Looks like you fixina be jus fine No doubt at your age you have the benefit of knowing some things that these younguns can't seem to grasp as yet ... like $23 for a cheap little light is INSANE, especially when harbor freight has little magnetic LED thingies 2 for $5....
-
Nope, it aint. Course, ya gotta keep the kitty off of it, but otherwise it'll keep 'til ya use it 10 backs shipped up here ends up running around $18-1900 ... for 180 feet of leather and no bellies. So, right at $10/foot for the best leather you can get, and the best hides of the best leather. I have ordered from a number of "retailers" selling Hermann Oak leather. They all claim they're just reselling what H.O. already graded, but with one exception (Goliger Leather) they all seem to think the customer won't know if they send a "C" or "D" grade, even though the order was for an "A" or "B". I had one place send me a side of 5/6 I could literally stretch line a fitness band. Now, granted... 5/6 isn't that heavy, but stilll.... I mean I could cut a 1.5" wide strap, and grab each end, and pull it out about 4-5 inches! And they charge 30% more than H.O. charges for the GOOD STUFF. So, yeah - if you're going to do leather every 7th Saturday, don't worry about it. If you're serious about making quality goods - either for yourself or for sale - call Hermann Oak
-
Yup. And, DARE I say, I'll be the jerk. Again. WHERE did this leather come from? WHO supplied this "$300 worth" of leather? Cuz I have REPEATEDLY seen some retailers selling a pile of cat pee and CALLING IT "$300 worth of leather". It should have been thrown away from the start, or used as floor mats somewhere, and the only reason it wasn't pitched out is because the "retailer" was able to find somebody who DIDN"T KNOW ANY BETTER to sell it to. TIP: MANY of the retailers you find HERE are here BECAUSE there are so many NEW GUYS ... (you may have heard "fish in a barrel"). But, of course, NOT ALL of them are hustlers. Not to detract too far from the subject, but I'll add that -- of those you meet around here, THESE have performed ... I have never bought ANYTHING from Hermann Oak (St. Louis, MO) that I wasn't pleased with. Yes, the NECK of the leather is generally not my favorite of any cow, but ALL the other leather I've got there was fantastic leather, less that 1 sq foot on the tip. Cheryl and Carlos at Goliger Leather (CA) stock and resell Hermann Oak leather, for those who don't buy H.O.'s minimum 10-side order. The A grade REALLY IS H.O. A grade, service is friendly and quick. I have had a piece of WIckett-Craig leather I wasn't happy with, by the vast majority of their leather has been STELLAR. And by way of honorable mention, though it's not leather, EVERYTHING I ever bought from Bob Kovar / Toledo Industrial was EXACTLY what I thought I was getting, shipped quickly and at reasonable cost, with the utmost concern for what I was trying to accomplish (thanks AGAIN, Bob). Oh, and Texas Custom Dies has done pretty well EVERYBODY ELSE I have shopped with here has been .... disappointing. Some even got multiple opportunities to keep a customer and couldn't (or wouldn't) do it. I haven't mentioned them here, since that isn't this thread, but there are a good many. In Springfield... In Atlanta...
