    But doesn’t the moisture bead up on the sealed leather, causing it to drip off the glass when you pick it up? That’s why I thought an unsealed top surface would absorb the moisture and prevent drips. Gary

    Yes, I use a wood slicker by hand to burnish... Did you let the first coat dry completely after the first coat? I have never had any paint peel off. I dilute the paint about 20% with distilled water.

    1. Only thing I can think of to remove something like Barge cement is lacquer thinner or acetone - both very flammable and nasty fumes, so use care when handling them. If it is water based glue, l am not certain what solvent will work - never tried to remove it. 2. Apply NFO to dry leather. If you wet the leather, let it dry completely and then apply NFO to the grain (smooth) side and don’t overdo it - you can always apply more but once you put too much on it can make the leather mushy. If you are going to dye the leather, let the dye dry completely and then apply NFO. Good luck! Gary

    Welcome! Removing old glue can be a problem. Try a solvent and see if it softens the glue, but realistically you might be better off covering it with a lining leather. To bend the leather and minimize cracking, try wetting it thoroughly. You will know pretty quickly if this will eliminate the cracking. I would give it a treatment with neatsfoot oil once you are through wetting and bending it and allowing the leather to dry completely. Looking forward to seeing the end result! Gary

    Thanks UpDn! I like the steel table - looks like it works much better than the small tables that come with the Chinese models. I bought a piece of 1/4” steel plate to use as a table on my press. Gary

    I think your painted edges look very good! I have been using Giardini to edge paint for about 9 months now and I think it does a great job. I normally burnish my edges and then paint them using the roller paint tool from Tandy. Normally two coats of paint with sanding in between coats, then burnish the painted edge and follow up with wax. I painted the edge on an eyeglass case that I carry in my back pocket constantly and it looks about the same as the day I finished it - no cracking or peeling! Gary

    I sometimes hear a slight clicking in my CB4500 - might be coming from the small takeup spring located right after the lower tensioner - it seems to quickly pop up while sewing. Everything seems to be sewing nicely, so I havent paid it any attention. If anyone knows differently I will be interested in learning more! Gary

    I used knives and guns when I was very young - from about the age of 11 - and I started my kids shooting when they were around 8 years old. Too many people around now days that are horrified at the thought of an 8 year old touching a knife or gun, even under adult supervision. Most of these types are in the bigger cities....

    Hey Ryan - how did you do the inlaid rattlesnake skin? Is it sandwiched between two layers of leather? I think it’s a bit fragile so you wouldn’t want the knife rubbing directly against the snake skin - correct? What weight and type leather and thread did you use? Gary

    Well said Mike - I have a few scrap projects in the bin as a result of my machine sewing education! Only takes a second to hit the wrong pedal and see your project go south with stitches where they are not supposed to be! By the way, I received the black leather scraps I bought from you and I am pleased with my purchase! Gary

    I think it's looking good! I think maybe the colors in the eye are a little too washed out - maybe more vibrant colors would make the eyes pop a bit more? Gary

    The last time I hunted with my flintlock was about 35 years ago. When I did go into the woods, I normally used heavy grease around the frizzen and pan to keep the moisture out. Also used 3F instead of 4F powder for priming.

    I use alcohol with Fiebings oil dyes with no problems
