Silly question but looking to progress to a rolled edge wallet and know i can use any leather, but what type of veg tan would you suggest and what thickness. Just want a nice finish but not for much money (pointless to buy a shoulder for maybe 2 sq Ft requirement) I did ask a guy who advertises on ETSY and had a video and templates for sale, Just asked what leather and thickness he suggest's before i brought the design, his answer "buy the design and its all in there" did not think it was going to be a trade secret, so not looking to buy his PDF and video now, hence the question to hopefully more helpful people

Hello! I’m new and just getting into leather crafting. I’m looking for some scrap that you are willing to part from. 1. Just made my first stitching pony! Looking for some leather to finish off the jaws. I need two pieces (something suitable for a stitching pony) , 4”W x 8”L x 1.2-1.5mm. 2. .8mm -1.2mm veg-tan. That will be very close to my first project. I want to practice saddle stitching, skiving, edge burnishing, slicking and all the fun stuff. Train how we fight as they say. You can criticize if you wish. next time I will try to get a more natural leather and a little thicker than this that is 1.3 mm thick. I have been buying my leather from a local Tandy store and I was wondering if this was the best value for the leather I am getting. I buy a side of 8-9oz veg tan and I tool on it. The only problem I have found is I really have to look for good sides. I wouldn't mind buying from a supplier if anyone has a good recommendation. I have checked out Weaver but they are more expensive than Tandy.

Hello This might not really be the right place, but I assume there are at least some reenactors here that are familiar with the stuff I need. I do film & theater stuff and reproductions for museums etc. I am currently looking for cowhide, 3-4 mm thick that has pebble grain texture on it, much like what the German army used during World War 1 and World War 2. Leather working is not my main area, so I have no idea of the suppliers - I've personally just used Tandy Leathers and Laederiet until now - neither have pebble grain leather available. Anyways, any help and hints towards the right direction would be much apreciated.

A custom order to be used in a Larp ( live action roleplaying game ) here in Sweden. Took about 40 hours all and all. The entire build is from Vegetable tanned leather. Patterns, colors and patina grew up throughout the build and it´s fully sealed for use outdoors in rain and the cold.

Hi, How economically feasable would you say is to buy an leather sewing machine like an Juki TSC 441 or it's clones like the Cobra class 4/CB 4500? I have heard stories from "just with 1 saddle repair you can pay off a leather sewing machine" to "it's more like a Hobby since Prices are to low for leather goods to justify an sewing machine". In my case it's indeed more an Hobby since I make only one-to-one personal sales despite I am on etsy.com. I have seen here an constructioners harness (for hammer, nails, screwdrivers, etc) made in Mexico (Truper brand) seemingly real leather for about 6 US$. Well constructed, lots of rivets and sewn with about #69 thread. Clear is, for that Price I would never make the harness. I would rather have an Price of 49 US$. Whats the real leather market about? Considered big retailers, Made in China and local leather shops as competition.

So, just more curious how people start to finish there projects. Working on a set of spur straps.. and I am hand stitching it. Would you make your groove and stitch marks before you dye it? or after? Do you glue the front piece to the lined piece before stamping or after? How do you do your steps when making something?

Hi, Has anyone an deep knowledge about the differences between FULL GRAIN PIG LEATHER and SPLIT COW LEATHER? Over here I started to Switch to full grain pig leather due to it being cheaper and IMHO stronger (doesnt rip at all) and it is dyed. Before I bought the expensier cow leather which they sold me for full grain but in reality I am sure it is split leather. I can rip it when applied with force. Cow leather is not dyed at all. I for my part like pig leather better since it's full grain and sometimes softer than the cow leather. But customers do not trust as much the longevity and durability of pig leather and so I ask here if someone knows some deeper knowledge about the differences. Quality, durability, stays soft - gets hard over time, etc. See here some works from pig leather versus cow leather. Second below (dark) leather item is full grain pig leather (Smartphone case). Hi guys! Regarding using acrylic top coat for coating parts of my leather bag, would there be a safety issue? Im using Zelikovitz Acrylic Top Coat in Satin finish. It clearly says Toxic on the warning label. I understand this could mean the fumes while applying it as it does have a strong smell. I have a toddler around and I am concerned of heavy metal exposure because of the coating in some parts of the bag. With regards to it being on some parts in the bag that I routinely touch, would there be a safety issue with skin absorption with the dried up acrylic coat on the leather? thank you!

The Pros and Cons of Crafting with Leather 7/13/2018 0 Comments As a textile material it’s said that the origins of leather are as old as civilization itself? A lot of writers credit its origins to different points in history, but perhaps the most impressive is actually found in the Bible. The Bible credits the origins of leather all the way back to Adam and Eve. After they sinned and were removed from the Garden of Eden it’s said that God made them garments from skin and clothed them. What type of skin? It doesn’t say, but I’m guessing it might have been a lamb or something similar. So regardless of what point in history you go back to, leather has been around a long time and will probably be around until the end of civilization itself. But what has made this material so appealing throughout the ages? Perhaps this blog is not intended to completely answer that question, but feel free to add to it with your comments below… So for now, let's talk about the pros and cons of crafting with leather. I think the best way to tackle this topic, is to simply look at the qualities of the material and it applications. In this blog I’m only going to be focusing on vegetable tanned leather, since this is what was used historically. Chrome tanned leather didn’t come along until the 1800’s. The Pros – It’s an eco-friendly and natural resource – No harmful chemicals are used in the tanning process. It has a very pleasant fragrance - Natural rich earthly scent that doesn't overwhelm. It is ideal for use in art or craft – Images can be carved and tooled into the surface of the leather to transform this material into literal works of art It can be wetted and molded into any shape or form you want. Magnificent statues and pieces of art have been molded with leather throughout the centuries, such as in the image to the right. It can be stained or dyed to any color you want It’s extremely durable and can last a lifetime (Special emphasis on Vegetable tanned leather) It’s not that expensive… - You might be surprised to here me say that, but considering what leather is and how much you can buy for the price, it really isn’t that expensive. Since leather is a natural resource, it’s prices will fluctuate from time to time. But regardless, I still think it’s a very affordable craft material that is unmatched by any other. It’s compatible – Leather is also very compatible with other textile materials, wood, and more. Leather takes on beautiful properties as it ages and antiques - As leather is exposed to natural elements, such as sunlight, moisture, and oils from our hands, over time the leather will take on a beautiful natural patina tan that only adds to it beauty and look. Cons – Leather requires a little upkeep – Compared to other textiles leather actually requires much less upkeep to maintain, but in order to keep it clean it’s best to protect your leather goods with leather care products from time to time. Best not to get it wet! – Leather can handle some moisture but being a natural material it’s best not to leave it in the rain if you really want it to last. Shopping for leather – One of the biggest complaints people have when buying vegetable tanned leather is that it has some scaring on the leathers top surface. But this is unavoidable since the leather is a natural material. So, if the animal is raised on the free-range, then it’s going to have some scaring from bug bites, barbed wire fences, branding marks, or other animal bites. In some ways I think these marks lend character and beauty to the properties of the leather, but if you are shopping for perfection, then there are more expensive hides that can be purchased. Top quality hides are usually made from animals that are raised in protective environments where their exposure to harmful conditions are removed. These hides are of course very beautiful, but also very costly. Sometimes it’s more affordable to buy 2 hides of a cheaper leather with scars than it is to buy 1 piece of hi-quality leather. I guess it just depends on what you are making and what the job demands. It’s a less known craft niche – Some may see this as a pro or a con, but I think the leathercraft industry doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Considering everything that can be done with leather and rich history of the craft I hope to see it become one of the most popular crafts the world has to offer. So as far as I can tell the pros, far outweigh the cons... What do you think?
