Hi, I am gonna switching from #277 to #138 bonded Nylon thread with my Cowboy 4500 and wanted to see if the needles DYx3 size #20 will go with that thread. Has anyone experience with #138 thread and size #20 needles? It's for thinner leather sewing like 1.7mm leather 2 or 3 layers. I believe #277 thread which I am using now is to thick and the needle makes to huge holes into the leather when using it on wallets, Holsters, Smartphone cases and the like were I use at max 1.7mm 2 layers leather from cow or pig (which is sometimes very soft). -

I don’t have any prior experiences handling sewings machines and have always just handstitched bags and wallets. For my first machine, I am considering a second hand Juki LS-341N. Is it a good machine for stitching 2 to 3 layers of 2mm vegtanned leather? How about oil or chrome tanned leather, denim, or canvas? What’s the thickest Vinymo thread that I could use with the Juki? For needles, Schmetz seems to be a good option. What sizes work best with Vinymo? Thank you!

A friend of mine asked me to replicate this Greek key pattern on his belt for a new hat band. I've been working with the pattern for a while now with little success. Problems are: 1) replicating stitch width to create pattern (left to right distance when looking at the photo) - all of the patterns I've tried are way too wide so it looks like random stitching versus a pattern, and 2) leather tearing out between stitching - when I do get the holes close enough to resemble the pattern then it tears out as one piece. Anyone done something like this? Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Hi! I've tried searching other threads for answers first (MANY times), but I seem to continue to have issues with my thread tension and I'm dying for some insight. As you'll see in the photos (just a trial run so let's not even talk about how terrible it is haha) one side of the thread seems to be fine, and the back side is always appearing to pull through. It doesn't matter the thickness of material I'm using, and the issue still occurs when I change thread size. I've attempted to bring the tension all the way up/down and adjust a little at a time, but this issue never goes away. I'm threading right, the bobbin is facing the right way, the needle size is correct.. I'm just at a loss. The machine is less than a year old. I'm new to the industrial machine so it's certainly been a learning curve and it could totally be something I'm just overlooking. Any suggestions?

I have 12 1lb spools (1 full see the rest ) of Eddington #90 black bonded nylon thread. I kept plenty for myself so I would love to trade for a colored bonded nylon thread in #90 or something else I do not have. I do hand stitching too and do not have everything I need. Mallet? Carving knife? Stamps? Snap tools etc. Make an offer!

I recently purchased a mini 441 sewing machine and I have a size 25 needle I'm using. I am looking for a bigger thread, basically for appearance. I am using a 346 right now and the thread is not very noticeable. Does anyone know of a bigger size thread I could use?

Hello, New to the forum so thanks for the help! I recently purchased a juki lu1508 and have been trying to determine the best thread brand (bonded nylon). I have it set up for 138 top and bottom and thus far it has worked admirably, although the stitches are a little loose when turning corners. (Any thoughts on that issue are appreciated) I would also prefer to use the same brand across all my machines (artisan 3000, tacsew t111-55) does anyone recommend a specific type (techsew vs. superior, etc. m) thanks again for your collective wisdom. Ok, so every time someone posts on here about a different sewing machine the topic of thread sizes, materials, etc. comes up. As a relative sewing machine newby, is there a sort of general guideline for what types and sizes of threads you'd want a machine to be able to handle? Also, is there a logic to thread sizing worth keeping in mind (like the larger the number, the thicker the thread or something)?

I had posted this in another thread, but thought you might like to see what Beetroot Red Tiger thread looks like on a black bridle belt. I like it. I kinda wished I'd had some 1.0mm for this, but in the end, the .80 looks pretty good too. -
I'm looking for some suggestions to get my machine's tension sorted. I use it 10-20 hours a week and it's normaly fine. But today the tension is acting funny. the stiching looks fine on top and bottom, but then I'll loose tension on the bottom and have a bunch of looped thread. i have checked the bobbin tension, the top tension, changed the needle...looking for more suggestions. thanks

Hello folks , here again with another one of my newbie situations: I love my thread , as we all do and well I'm a beginner so I don't use much right a tiny 25 yard spool would do me well for a good time, but as I began to actually do more work , make more things , I began to realize "hey , this won't do". And this constant buying of thread has been on and on.I like to buy Tandy's nylon waxed thread: https://www.tandyleather.com/en/product/waxed-nylon-thread-25-yds-22-9-m And it's only 4 dollars, right so I'm not complaining or anything but I really feel I could do better for the long run , I know not all of you go and buy tiny 25 yard spools but yeah what's something I could do to not spend 16 dollars on 100 yards ? Also , today I bought some "Omega nylon #2 thread" thinking I could rub some beeswax on it and pass it off as waxed nylon thread , I tried it , and it didn't feel as good as Tandy's, maybe because the beeswax was homemade ? Also , the thread isn't made up of 3 little stands like Tandy's, it's only 2. Could I somehow make this work ? It's 275 yards. Thank y'all in advance

Traveling in Maine today and decided to stop into Maine Thread to have a look a pick up some supplies. Besides being like a step back in time, they have what they call "seconds" boxes of stitching thread. Rolls with not quite enough on them or they consider under waxed or over-waxed. Otherwise perfect stitching thread. Rolls are 2 for $1. This is for the drop in trade only, they don't advertise it. If you ever in the area, it a great stop. They are incredible people to deal will. This is my 20 roll, $10 haul.

It seems that Tiger/Ritza thread made by the Julius Koch company is widely regarded as some of the best material for hand stitching. I have to agree so far given the small samples I've been able to find and use - really like it. That Tandy thread I was using pales in comparison. All that said... Does any know where to buy this from in the United States? In small or large quantities? I can't find one source, let alone a reliable source, for Tiger/Ritza thread here. I've only been able to order it as small samples from the UK and shipping cost make that not a sustainable option. If not for those small samples, I'd think the stuff was mythical - since its about as hard to find as a unicorn. I'd even be willing to buy larger or industrial spools if that's all I can find. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this question, key word almost. I hand stitched on shearling to skirts the other night and was thinking I really have no idea what knots I should be using here, which is part of why this question is almost embarrassing to ask I kinda pride myself on my knot tying ability from being around horses the majority of my life and when I wasn't I was in the service I've learned many knots over the years and have forgot very few. I started my stitch by going through the first hole then going through the second to make a loop did this twice pulled tight tied a square knot with a half hitch on each side ran the dead end of that over so it pulled it up into the stitch on the underside as I stitched for about three inches. To tie to my needle i tried a surgeons knot had it pull out about a quarter way through then tried a palmer had it pull out and then tied a bowline it never pulled out but was a pain to pull through the holes. Finally got to the end tied two half hitches through where i started then back stitched a little ways and tied two more. Thinking about it that seems weak. What are appropriate knots for these situations? Also had my diamond awl pull out of the handle on the next to last hole but thats another story/question for later.

Hello, I'm trying to make a wallet lately, and I've used yellow threads for hand stitching, my issue is that with waxed threads, especially the bright colored ones stain with the dirt from our hands overtime. I think that the cause of this is the wax on the thread that makes it such a dust magnet. Is there any thread that you recommend that doesn't stain? Or am I just wrong?

Hello, I would greatly appreciate some feedback about the Amy Roke Polyester thread. We are really frustrated, any help would be wonderful. I am having a problem with the Amy Roke poly threads (532 size). I have searched the internet, asked questions (on Instagram), and it seems that I am the only one having this issue. For reference I have used and have Tiger thread and Lin Cable. We are using Wuta pricking irons in 7, 8, and 9 spi. We have been using the Amy Roke for a few months on many items. Here is our problem: The wax or coating on the thread is coming off. You can take your fingernail and scratch it off, or with very light use it will start to look like it is fraying. If you look closely the fibers are fine, but it is in fact the wax that is coming off (the wax from the factory, most of the time we do not wax it before sewing). It looks terrible. Sometime you can burnish it off by taking a cloth and rubbing hard, very hard. This is happening with multiple colors, whether we wax the thread or not etc. We have 24 of the colors so it is not just one spool. I am confident the thread is strong. However, I cannot send a product out with this happening. I compared this to Tiger thread. Tiger thread will discolor a bit with wear but it's not near as bad as Amy Roke and it does not look like it is fraying. Lin Cable does not seem to have this problem at all. Is anyone having this problem? Is there a solution? Am I doing something wrong? I would LOVE to be told I am doing something wrong Here are some photos (it is hard to get a good photo of it).
