Start-up machines on a small business budget?
Northmount replied to Vermontleatherworks's topic in Getting Started
A Techsew 2700 or 2750 maximum as stated above is 3/8" thickness. You'll find it difficult to sew 3 layers of 8 oz leather. Hard going, presser feet leaves marks, difficult to adjust the presser foot pressure, so you wouldn't want to do it very often. Just did an axe sheath a few days ago. 3 layers 8 oz leather including the welt. Machine wasn't happy! 1/4" is much easier going. Maximum thread size 210 on the top and 138 on the bobbin. Regardless of what machine you buy, every time you change thicknesses and thread sizes, you will have to spend some time adjusting the thread tension. As mentioned, no one machine does everything. -

@joebardwell Your pics don't show. The embedded URL references google mail. Save your photos to your device, then post them. Drag them to the area at the bottom the window, or if you know your way around your file system, click/tap on choose files. photos must be small enough to comply with the site's restrictions. Refer to this thread for some helps and suggestions. I am removing the pics as they don't work. Please post new photos. Thanks. -
Take it out to the shady side of the house where the lighting is all around, fewer shadows. No really bright reflections.

I don't know where you come up with using strange file formats (*.jfif). PLEASE post all your pics as JPG type. Then they can be viewed here without requiring some one to download them. I'm removing these files. You can upload jpg files.

You might want to qualify that statement! This is a global forum. You might have to cover shipping to Australia for example. You should read the marketplace rules.

@Lianne and @LeoBasic Please start a new thread for replacing the stone. This thread is in the marketplace and will be closed when the skiver is sold. This info needs to be saved and made available to all. Thank you.

I think they wait until they have a full shipping container before they ship. Mine supposed went to Mississauga (bypassed Vancouver) then the container gets separated into packages, and transferred through customs to Canada Post. Then who knows when it finally gets on the road again!

Purchased an item from a USA website. Actually just a front for a Chinese site. Only notice I got was "we are preparing your package for shipping". After a couple weeks, tried to follow up and see if it had been shipped. I sent emails to 2 different addresses that should have resulted in a reply, but nothing. Purchased using PayPal so after a month or so, decided to file a dispute claim. There was the tracking info! So started tracking. Have 3 pages of tracking updates. Says it has been delivered. Since I use a UPS store for secure mail and deliveries, I know that it has not been delivered. It was shipped via China Post. I suspect that a number of the tracking entries are fake. But we shall see. Giving them 1 more week to see if it actually gets delivered. I'm at about the 2 month point already. So the point of this post is that shipments via China Post and attempted contacts with Chinese vendors may be problematic. Hope yours goes better.

@Ben00 as TomG says, use jpg format and follow his instructions of how to post photos. 800x600 pixels is adequate, 1280x768 is fine too. Can post around a 100 photos with those approximate dimensions.

You probably need to reduce the file sizes to meet the size restrictions here. Check out this link for helps and suggestions.

I've been using an automotive body hammer. Not polished or or buffed up. It works fine for tapping down stitching. Really, you are just trying to tap the thread down so it doesn't stand really proud above the leather. As long as the leather is not wet, it's not likely to leave impressions in the leather. It should smooth out the feed dog marks and presser foot marks. Looking at your new hammer, I would smooth it out more than what it is. I don't like the pit in the face. Some gentle work with a smoothing file should make quick work of it.
