"Carving" on Western Style Holsters
kiwican replied to PAMuzzle's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I watched an interview with stolhman it showed some of the tools he used to tool leather with. All hand made and not many of them either. If that was true he did amazing work with practically nothing. May have been the same "back in the cowboy day" -

That would work too. It literally is as thick or thin as you want it to be. But still plan it out. Make a template. Get your measurements correct.- 18 replies

Depends on you and your tastes. I would not go much higher than a 4 to 5 Oz but its up to you. If you go to thick you might have to gauge the folds out along the spine area to make it sit right- 18 replies

Based on what you have said you could go with a veg or a chrome tan then. Measure it all out...but include the thickness of the book too! And go for it.- 18 replies

Thats a Great Job Grey! I was in store the other day and saw a yellow one of those bags, not as nice as yours at all. The price on the bag was over 1000.00- 11 replies

Chrome tan, Veg tan, Other tan....Help me understand
kiwican replied to Rossr's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
So it's been said. If I han to guess. I' say that the statement applys to mamals. I can't see how a crocs brain could tan it. Especially a large one. Or fish leather. Seems to be one of those often repeated things? -
I have only made a pair of sandals for myself. They work for me but are no master piece of work. So I know I won't be making any money from it. Have you thought about teaming up with a medical professional that deals with making custom shoes?. I know in Canada here or at least in my area a few people make a decent living that way. They have the medical background and teamed with people that can craft from leather

Chrome tan, Veg tan, Other tan....Help me understand
kiwican replied to Rossr's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Nice find Ross. Imperical evidence seems to be lacking and it also seems we may have had the issue wrong in the first place. I went back to look at my needle files in the chrome tan roll I made a few years back. No issues at all
