Latest project
battlemunky replied to TheOne's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I'd beg to differ that you haven't found your style my friend. There are elements in that wallet I haven't seen, that I recall, or are at least uncommon. Those mitered corners and the card pocket on the oversized main body piece are pretty outside of the ordinary. Looks pretty well done aside from a little bit of confidence in the carving, a couple inconsistencies with the stitching, and maybe a little more time on your edges. I think you are well on your way. You are making really solid wallets it appears. Good on ya! -
There will be blood.

That is nice!

Yeah, what you did isn't a simple project and you did it pretty ok, especially for a first project! Congrats. As Tuga mentioned, your stitching look really good compared to a lot of folks' first attempts. While you have some hiccups here and there you executed pretty well. If you want to feel like an infant in the world of what you just made, I recommend a youtube video by Nigel Armitage on box stitching...he's a master and his work will make you want to cry but it'll help you see what you want to do next time. Just plop that into your search in YT and enjoy.

Yeah, that is unfortunately not normal...they should've never let that leave their store. That is fine for a demo piece where folks can try out stamps or a swivel knife in store but to let that get into the customer's hands as a representative sample of what they sell, not so much. Sadly though, it's typical for Tandy. Some folks on here will hate on what I just said but I find it more reliable that Tandy will sell you bad crap ESPECIALLY if you are doing it online. In many cases they are the only game in town and they prey on folks who are not aware that there is better.

Holster work...

That's a really nice rig! -
Also, what kind of customer you got that is checking the colorfastness of thread inside a pocket? They may be more trouble than what they are worth. Also, inside a pocket should be pretty well protected against UV unless it is thin or gauzy. The sun will win every battle, every time.

Ah, see I was figuring that was the issue @sbrownn because I've used CATIA, ProE, ProM, AutoCAD, and a few others and never had issues but they were all paid versions. I've also had an IT dept supporting those high dollar seats too ensuring that we didn't have issues. I've only ever used SketchUp free and its the only one I've had issues with getting to print right. Google and Trimble versions, both free and neither would print right. I got close a few times but as soon as you move the model its back to the drawing board quite literally.

I believe if you had the paid version the sizing works itself out. It's one way of getting you to pony up the money.

I think they are both acrylic. I've never mixed them but using them side by side, I can't tell a difference aside from the M&G being clean and fresh smelling.

Valid point @jimi. However, I have absolutely zero self control like I'm an angry toddler or something, so I plan this into the design and make my wallets to have the slide toward the fold so when another angry toddler decides 3 will fit where one was meant, it doesn't lose cards. In theory at least...

Sweet!

I have Sinabroks and they are verrry similar to KS Blades. Agreed they can double for both pricking irons and stitching irons. I've used then in what summed to 12 oz and they were just starting to sweat although they did start making the topside a good bit wider.

Sorry. I reckon I should've added that when I posted the pics. *secret decoder ring mode activated* The first two are Angelus, denoted with the "A", Blue Jean and Honey. The third is Eco-Flo Green Waterstain. The next batch of columns is Fiebings ProDye in the colors (if you can read my writing) listed. The next set of columns are Fiebings spirit dyes in the colors mentioned except the Mahogany which was dried when I opened it, so I used blue Eco-Flo Waterstain. Then Eco-Flo Saddle Tan Gel Antique, then Fiebings Dark Brown paste antique followed lastly by Fiebings Sheridan Brown paste antique, which for some reason didn't post completely in the pictures but look full on my phone. I applied all with a Q-tip. Perhaps the Angelus dyes would look better with multiple coats from a dauber, but honestly, I've never had Angelus work for me as well as Fiebings does. The top halves (two coats) of the Fiebings Pro look really good and consistent, even before drying fully.
