omg cmon folks lighten up has the psyops from social media destroyed your ability to have a conversation? I would call that a diamond chisel. A really crappy made diamond chisel!!! with the flat chisel edge it more resembles the lacing chisels i own. All my diamond chisels are filed to a point on all four sides like an awl, like Burkhart is trying to say, which really means they aren't chisels after all LOL. But the tines themselves are cut the same the shape of the point being the only difference i can see from the ones I OWN. See folks the English language isn't the best to use but its what we have to determine the names of things the bad part is there seems to be more than one English language. Also several ways to interpret other languages into English. Why they call them chisels!!!!!! Chisel, noun, a wedge like tool with a cutting edge at the end of the blade, often made of steel, used for cutting or shaping wood, stone, etc. Also found this while perusing the subject, lol so my above comment about them not being chisels is wrong also man isn't learning fun!!! diamond-point chisel noun : a cold chisel having a diamond-shaped cutting face for cutting V grooves or sharp internal corners SO NOW with that new information ITS NOT A "DIAMOND POINT CHISEL" but it is still a chisel and does cut the same shape into leather with the same or similar angle. Last thing I, m not yelling, arguing or any other negative connotations you may want to read into this I just copied and pasted and I'm not gonna waste my time changing fonts!!!!

a round gear would even work like a bicycle chain and gear

a foot pedal tied to the handle to pull it down, a spring mounted above the handle to pull it back up, very simple. or if you want to get fancy a concentric cam mounted on the handle shaft you could then put your spring below it by the pedal. push the pedal down it pulls the lever down take you foot off the spring pulls it back up.

to be anti chisel, anti awl, etc... would be anti tool which is kind of hypocritical considering the amount of tools we use in the craft. its just silly. I wasn't offended my friend, by anyone's comments. just trying to clarify things a bit. And i have read those articles as well, there will always be people who consider their way of doing things as the only way to do things. Many people can and do sew with an awl exclusively and have mastered the process, they become purists in a sewing sense and rightly so I guess i haven't got that good and probably never will. They see using a chisel as adding steps and unnecessary time while beginners see them as saving time and frustration. I still respect their right and ability to do so because i want to be that good too all the while trying to give sound accurate advise to folks who are just learning as i still am after many years.

I don't think anyone is anti chisel, at least i didn't get that from any comments, how ever some realize they have their limits just like any tool. I'll be willing to bet almost everyone uses them in some form. Here's the deal for me i have chisels and i use them on every project if possible. With that being said some times the teeth just aren't long enough to go all the way through so guess what i need an awl. So i have learned that if my project is to thick i simply mark the outside layer then use an awl to push through the other two layers it saves well over an hour of chiseling through three layers separately then trying to line everything up then having to clean the holes anyway with an awl. its simple and fast, mark, use your awl and then sew. secondly i glue my edges so any chisel holes usually have some amount of glue up and need an awl run through it. Thirdly try doing a mitered edge on a round box with chisels. Simply some things just cant be done with chisels. On misinformation its easy to do without being intentional. We all see what we do everyday and how we do it. Sure something can be made exclusively with chisels if its flat and thin enough but that's not all i see in my world. I see weird shaped and thick stuff to often to just say buy these and your all set. But i guess I'm different I don't want to, really I just cant its no fun to me, make cookie cutter projects and blindly follow Tandy patterns ( NOT THAT ITS A BAD THING)I like to learn and discover and explore and above all push myself. i haven't mastered awl sewing but I'm trying. We just have to remember how big the leather world really is from watch straps to Saddles and there isn't just one way of doing things or one tool that will do it all..

yup you can use either or both they basically do the same thing , keep your sharp edge sharp.

a butchers steel works well. i also use 1500 grit sandpaper which i spray glue to my granite stone in an out of the way place so i can keep all my cutting tools honed up as i work.
-
please don't use or attempt to use a file or a machine on your blade you don't need either for a new pristine blade. A decent set of water stones are the easiest and some of the best to use also learn to keep them flat as they wear down, yes stones need maintenance too. Then there are other options to finish polishing the edge after the stones. A strop with rouge or 1000 + grit sandpaper for example. I will also say you don't need anything for now on your blade except a steel , a strop or 1000+ grit sandpaper until the edge gets ruined.

You mean the chisels stitch lines don't you Yea they are almost perfect. never the less if you don't have an awl and don't use one you have no experience to say if they make the job easier or not. Don't get me wrong i have used chisels for many years, even before i had an awl too!!! I used to think the way you did until I figured it out it but to each their own as you say.

very cool !! i like the light stands too!!
-
oh I'm sorry i thought you were the op but your not. Yes you do need an awl in fact If you have an awl you don't need the chisels. i agree you can use a teaspoon and a pair of pliers if you want or any number of sharp pointy things but your stitch lines will suck ! compared to doing it the right way plus your hands will love you to death, makes pulling the thread and finding the holes 100 times easier. I know about fixed incomes too i have to make most of my tools including my awl blades. But if you have to buy one thing buy a good awl. these rock!!

yes and no usually if a knife is over heated it is just in a spot or two not the whole blade so sometimes you can grind a new edge on it correctly without re-tempering the whole blade. Sometimes not so easy depends on the amount of damage. I find most of the time the damaged knives are usually ground down to much with a really rough type grinding wheel and both the edge and blade are damaged.
-
it doesn't necessarily mean its ruined because it was sharpened by machine, almost all knives are done by machine when made. I sharpen mine out to 1000 grit on a machine. If it was done wrong however and heated beyond about 400 degrees then it could have lost its temper but you would see discoloration in the metal of any number of colors. Is it uniformly sharp ? And does it hold an edge? Usually if a person over heats a blade they burn off the very tip as its the thinnest and most delicate. Are the tips on your knife still nice and sharp? Last thing you can easily just hand sharpen it your own way if it hasn't lost its temper.
-
lol you've been doing this for two months and asked for advise .... ok good luck sorry i wasted your time.
-
mine were cheapo amazon, I replaced them with Tandy craft tool pro series and haven't had one bend yet and use them just the same. The cheapos work ok and they do the job plus they are just as easy to straighten as they are to bend lol.
-
you need an awl before you need chisels or at the least at the same time. i tried some similar to these, they bend really easily.

beautiful work, I'm thinking matching pocket book next.

those are awesome my friend tell me your technique! Are they burned in or stamped?

Please help me sharpen this curved blade
chuck123wapati replied to NoLifeTilLeather's topic in Sharpen it!
go get a round diamond stone like this then use a butchers steel to finish it. https://www.amazon.com/EZE-LAP-4-Inch-Diamond-Sharpener-Handle/dp/B000UVNT8Y/ref=asc_df_B000UVNT8Y?tag=bngsmtphsnus-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80333185695376&hvnetw=s&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4583932713608980&psc=1 -

How much to charge for your leather goods?
chuck123wapati replied to GrampaJoel's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Sometimes they don't care about either, sometimes they care to much about one or the other obviously in this case from the comments not many are willing to pay for his website and advertising at 115 bucks for a strap and buckle so there is a curve which is the point i'm making people will pay for it to a limit. So my maybe my question should be how much overhead are people willing to pay for a product or be expected to pay? How much should they be expected to pay for your inability to set up your web site your self all of it , part of it? You see we are all consumers personally I don't care what your advertising costs, as you pointed out, that's your problem and I'm not going to pay an exorbitant amount for it. For example I don't and wont buy NIKE tennis shoes, why because they are over priced simple and to the point I am not going to buy their brand just because they have cool commercials on tv. Now they are a BRAND name highly regarded and successful so how much do you think I'm willing to pay unknown Joe Blow for his website and advertising? On the other hand a lot of people do buy from them so are they wrong for being so high priced? is Joe Blow wrong for doing the same thing? Simply put the bottom line is i can buy them at their price or choose not to no matter the reasoning behind any of it. Now get this the web has thrown us another curve in the quandary, your product can be hated and boycotted instantly due to your political or personal views of life. No other reason, quality doesn't matter, cost doesn't matter, truth doesn't matter any more. What matters is the buzz word you use or the pronoun you use. -
that's a good one!! keys, ties, scarves, belts, towels, pot holders, jewelry, fishing poles lol.

custom boots that don't fit
chuck123wapati replied to JAM's topic in Shoes, Boots, Sandals and Moccassins
the only info i could come up with on boot volume is an article explaining it for ski boots. Some type of calculations according to your foot length width and height. it does say its not a standard so there are variations in how they are interpreted. It also says it makes for a very tight boot. Over all my experience is saying it is probably a program built to do what experienced boot makers can do without a computer program. As soon as you mentioned "bespoke" my hackles were raised as to the amount of experience this company has in actual boot making compared to modern advertising gimmicks. I would send them back I've seen handmade custom boots made correctly by experienced boot makers, they fit perfectly as Fred has stated.
