In Ontario some folks dedicated (one word for it) ride well into the shoulder season and we use salt and brine on the roads which even if the roads are clear it is picked up on boots getting to and from the bike. May want to see what salt does to it if you salt the road in WI. You should post some pics of your destructive testing program and results if you have them.

Well done. I bet you can give the backpack rivets a go and make them less splattered looking at least a little. Couldn't hurt to try on a less visible one first. PS love that anvil they made you.
-
Yup may just be too big....You may be using the wrong size setter for the rivet size since too big will fit for setting but perhaps the domer is too deep? I have 2 sets (#9 and #12 - there is #14 but I am not there yet!) the three part tool set with a separate setter, rounder (for the post) and domer (for the flat back). Nice thing about the separate tool is you can move the rounder around the post to get it evenly rounded and all the way down to the washer. They were a great investment and I love using copper rivets all the time.
-
If you are using a rivet setter that is all in one there should be a small concave impression on the bottom beside the hole for the post. If you use this the bur over the cut off post you get a rounded look rather than flattened and there are no sharp bits. If you intent to use copper a lot there are very nice rivet tool sets that include separate tools for setting, burring and then even doming the back side nicely. here is one source... not where I got mine but first that came up in search; https://www.rmleathersupply.com/products/douglas-rivet-setter-domer now maybe you know all this but from the flattened splatted look I would say you are missing a step or tool function. Here are some shots of mine when I use the rounded peener to bur and then dome the back side (causes the little flat on the post so perhaps I should do it in the other order..) Also these are dyed over which was to give an aged effect to the piece.

Formed Knife Sheaths
plinkercases replied to ABR's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Those are very nice pieces ABR for sure. I like the pancake version it is very well formed and designed over all. Well done. As for the stamp before or after issue... Depending on that stamping or carving I do it before or after but when after... I have collected a variety of steel flat stock sections and width so I can select a piece or pieces that the molded leather fits over and stamp against that on the granite rather than the wooded forms etc. I also have a variety of cobbler's anvils which can often give good solid support in or under the work that needs any stamping after forming... to each their own I guess. -
One of the reasons I will wear a vinyl glove when stitching is that it gives me time to deal with stabs and jabs without the blood getting on the work!! as has been said your work is intentionally and beautifully "rough"...and my goodness how heavy is the hammer you use to peen your copper rivets? are you using a purpose built setting/peening tool or just bashing away.. I have never seen them flattened like that and again... looks kinda cool! make sure your head knife is sharp as with all knives if its dull you push harder and it will tend to go its own way and if god forbid it bites you it is always better to get a nice clean sharp knife cut than a dull hack. practice on lighter stuff before tackling anything heavy and curvy.

pellet holders for folks who compete in what's called Field Target discipline with air rifles. they wear these around their necks so pellets are easy to get at when seated.

Another 1911 rig
plinkercases replied to RegisD's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
You could be supplying the Texas Rangers with their rigs. Very nice once again. -
When shooting in a CAS completion you need to get off the loading table quickly and also need to be absolutely certain about the number of rounds loaded so having a strip or case which holds the exact number of rounds for a "stage". Also some matches go at least 4 stages and each stage can use 20 rounds so you would still need to reload your cartridge belt unless you could put 80+ loops on it... or are a big fella with a long belt (which you can actually reach all rounds) .... which I am not.

I have used the same technique with the stacking cookware to mold (get them at the goodwill store for a buck or two). Looking forward to see what this turns into.

Thanks for posting this... I have known men who just gave up (not the same as living gracefully without treatment - gave up and crashed their lives) and men who carried on as you have. You are a power of example and the leather work is cool too. God Bless you and your family and may you hope be renewed daily.

In North America (Canada and US at least - not sure about Mexico....) "Cougar" also refers to older, attractive women who like to date younger men. I wouldn't say its a problem but.... if you have a problem with these cougars in the Ukraine then that may not always be a bad thing. Tempted to post a picture but I will leave it to you and google to complete the 'image" of Immiketoo's cougar expectation!

Wow very nice work... looking forward to the rest of its finishing.

Motorcycle Shifter Boot Protector
plinkercases replied to LearningCurveLeatherwork's topic in Motorcycles and Biker Gear
ya... I know... same in Toronto (except must have helmets by law) while on the other end of the scale here we have electric bike riders in pajamas, baseball caps under Styrofoam helmets, with a case of bear between their legs.... smoking with a bungy corded radio playing full blast.. and often a small dog in a box somehow attached.... They are an unregulated, un-insured, unlicensed threat to public safety on the road and sidewalks....but I digress... -

I agree here... but I also agree about seeing a need in the hipster market! Go for it and can't wait to see what happens... and you can even call them "Bespoke Boot Guards" and they will really drool. -
