  1. If they are anything like ours around here, they look at the sizes we desire as waste and are happy to lose some. I started off offering the owner $20 for a chunk and he said he wouldn't charge me for what they consider garbage. Even at $20 it is a steal. And I had the run of the pile, could took it all, had my choice of color, size, shape.
  2. Last weekend I made some shearling hose shoes for my mom for xmas so to keep dad from feeling like Tiny Tim, I made him a wallet. As any of y'all into rock and roll know, a few weeks ago we lost Malcolm Young from AC/DC and they are my dad's favorite band. He was pretty sad about it....said "that dude is one of my heroes", so instead of a plain wallet like I was planning, I had the idea to make him an AC/DC wallet. If anyone can tell me how to get images to post in here I'd appreciate it. It used to work for me but now I always get the size limit error. I'm apologizing in advance for the links. https://image.ibb.co/gcwKpb/20171201_141820_1.jpg https://image.ibb.co/n0QZNw/20171201_145749_1.jpg https://image.ibb.co/jsEuNw/20171202_114753.jpg https://image.ibb.co/hr5OFG/20171202_114812.jpg https://image.ibb.co/khOAvG/20171202_113502.jpg https://image.ibb.co/buvqvG/20171202_114806.jpg
  3. For bigger granite slabs you may want to try a cabinet/countertop maker. I stopped by our local place here and he litterally opened up the back door and pointed to a 20 ft tall heap of it and said "take all you want." Mine is about an inch thick.
  4. Here is a link to it: https://www.tandyleather.com/en/product/geometric-stamping-grid-craftaid-5-8-3-4/geometric-stamping-grid-craftaid-5-8-3-4 Looks pretty handy.
  5. Did you use one of those geometric grid templates to keep it all straight? I have had them in my Tandy cart for a year and haven't bought them yet. Again, amazing work.
  6. Well done. Pupley should have that for many years to come. I like the choice of brass hardware you opted for.
  7. Man, that wayyyyyy outclasses the Leatherman for sure. It is the $5,000 dollar rims on the $500 dollar car. That ain't your fault. Wonderfully clean and well executed.
  8. Agreed with the Mutt, that is a great looking backpack. I really like the roll down buckle strap top.
  9. That is beautiful work! I hope the marriage outlasts the cover.
  10. I believe you can just thin these with water to lighten them up too but those are both straight from the bottle. They are about as dark as the pics too so this is close to real life. I do notice a bit of color transfer from the sheath when I wear it and get some sweat or rain on it even having SnoSealed it.
  11. Here are links. Can't seem to post pics directly, my apologies. https://image.ibb.co/hgaYVG/20171130_183550.jpg https://image.ibb.co/dybwjb/20171130_183522.jpg
  12. They recommended it because not all Tandy floor salesfolk are created equal. I ask them if they work with leather when they make a recommendation. They likely had no idea what works and what doesn't. I went in for a new diamond awl and the dude immediately pushed me to the most expensive plastic Craftool haft they had in the store that didn't even do what I wanted.....so I asked the dude if he worked with leather and he said he didn't so I pretty much used him as a parts GPS from then on. I have green and blue Eco Flo waterstain and it works but is nowhere close to as good, IMO, as Fiebings dye. I used SnoSeal on the pieces I've used it on. I'll try to get pics and post them even though the pic post thing doesn't like me on here....
  13. Thanks gents! I'm making dad a wallet, I'll add pics of that too. I've done a few of those so I feel more confident there.
  14. Couldn't upload pics directly so the links have the pics.
  15. This is my first attempt at shoes ever. Its a good thing they are for my mom or else someone would be asking for a redo. They are saddle stitched and the sole is that golden saddle shearling that cowboycolonel was giving away for shipping cost, backed with 7-8 oz veg tan. The upper parts are purple flesh sided and creamy white hair sided. They are ridiculously warm which is what my mom will like even if the shoes turned out a little better than a macaroni necklace. They should be bomb proof though. Her name is Starr so I carved a few stars into the soles for some sort of tread. If you haven't worked with shearling I would recommend you do so. It is tricky to keep things even due to the hair but it works like butter. The project was fun and as with all projects, I learned a bunch. I got the pattern from instructables. Link is below. Had to wing the pattern and a few other things but I got the idea there. http://www.instructables.com/id/Simple-Shearling-Boots/ https://ibb.co/kiykoR https://ibb.co/ecDJ8R https://ibb.co/jNCOa6
  16. Damn Jeff ( @alpha2 ) , that is about as solid advice as it gets.
  17. Super cool and exotic! Glad you got the splitter work well enough to yield some usable pieces for you.
  18. I've yet to try sunburst with my airbrush yet. Only having done it by hand I know it takes a lot of rubbing to blend them in. Maybe you could do a test piece and after you finish your black edge and roll up a paper tower pretty tight and dip the end in isopropyl alcohol and then rub the ever living hell out of the blended areas in a circular motion.
