  1. Restoration is a funny thing, some are happy to repair the original , but the repair must stand out as a eyesaw so people know its not original, often on old buildings. They take a 500 plus year old cathedral and insit the new blocks of stone stand out a gleaming new colour whilst the surrounding blocks are covered in 500 years of grime Some others want to retain the grubby worn out patena with all the faults remaining and value it highly even if it looks a mess Others make it back to a serviceable object that can be used and looks great maybe 95% of its original look Depending on your most modern point of view you either hate whatever was done or love it Me i think what you have done is great and its now a practical object that can be used for its original function
  2. For about £125 you can buy a 3D printer "Ender 3" and print your own lettering for embossing as either positive or negative using all available font styles with proportional spacing so they look great, a typical name print will cost less than about £0.50 in filament. You can use a free online software package named "Tinkercad" to get started which whilst basic will do all you require for making stamps with a Arbor press (1-2 ton)
  3. I doubt there is much difference in the awl blades themselves apart from the very low cost ones, But if your inclined to be impressed by a wooden handle, you can spend a small fortune on exotic wood and shape
  4. Are you using the water thickener Carrageenan and painting the leather with Alum before starting. That seems to be the best way so i understand

  7. Please can you advice what dye or paint you used and found best
  8. I find if i force it off with the blade it takes force and can make it unlevel, but i guess different machines act different, mine is only a cheap Ender 3, but if I let it cool itself it seems to keep level for a month or two
  9. Wow aggressive on the presser foot
  10. My wish list would include a SLA printer but the low cost ones at present have very small print limitations, but the detail of print is superb but also limited on mixtures at present Have a great Christmas all
  11. I would guess the room temperature will make a big difference in plate cooling time and also the size of the print on the bed
  12. Hi Aussies Understand things are tough with the heat and fires, just hope all is well with you and you keep safe and it does not effect you to much Wishing you a happy Christmas and a prosperous new year Chris Same to all readers Sorry i could not think of a forum so picked this one

  14. I just use 5 times and a bit, what the hell the thread is cheap enough
  15. No experience of laser print on leather, but could you just leave alone and spray a sealant over it, od maybe a vacuum cleaner to remove the loose particles and then a spray sealant
  16. I found this conversion file that seems to do the conversion stl to other formats at $60 which might work, have no need myself so have not tried it https://3d-viewers.com/index.html

  22. you have done a first class job, but not sure about the fastening, maybe the more traditional frame like here would be a improvement https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/745748018/brushed-brass-metal-closure-purse-frame?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=doctors+bag+frame&ref=sc_gallery-1-2&plkey=5630470cb71637f939ec42f871f348c77e23789f%3A745748018
  23. Why not just dissect old briefcases or handbags, so you start with the real thing
  24. Depending on the strength required and or the cosmetic look, you can buy say tiger thread in 0.6, 0.8 as well as 1mm, so mayb e the 2nd punch with thinner thread would give a nicer finish
