  1. SLC said Herman Oak is/has been running at full capacity (tanning pits) to keep up with demand so SLC is taking the hides after drying from the pits to get them faster rather than waiting for HO to do all the splitting themselves. They have videos explaining it and on the HO veg on their site most weights/sizes are mto.
  2. SLC has Herman Oaks old splitter so during busy times like currently they get the hides in full thickness and split to order. I have a hide now that I had split the lower belly area to 6oz and the rest is natural. 8-9oz up to 12-14oz in areas from shoulders to the butt.
  3. Springfield Leather Com. You've tried using a split, don't know how it's any different than a if they made cows that thick. Unless you have glued split to split back before which I doubt you have.
  4. The bag company sells leather?
  5. If you need 20oz I would consider for instance at SLC they sell the splits from the hides they split. You could get a 12oz veg hide and get a 8oz split and glue them together and you'd hardly be able to tell. You can get a full side split for 30.00.
  6. Beautiful work, what happened to the border stamp?
  7. Go on fleabay and get a set of stitching chisels (10ish). I have the 4mm which is about 6 stitches per inch. Punch all the holes and get a pair of needles and thread and simplify it..

  9. With not knowing what you plan to do with, I would start with oiling it and use a conditioner. Being that they're numbered I would keep them as one but if you plan on using it I still would oil and condition the top and keep it so you have all the original pieces.
  10. I can't resist, but, you might want to check the date on your NYPost article.
  11. He had an injury to his knee that prevented him from passing the physical related to 100 yd dash, or some such thing. He asked me, "how far do think I'm required to "dash" in a C-130?". I know he still regrets not finishing out his career. But they'll make it a priority to help with transgender surgeries, not help get their active duty help to continue to serve.
  12. Don't know if you have pickle fingers like me but I had a choice needing one of the little bobbin screws, The screw was 3.00 or buy the bobbin case with screw in it for 4.00. No brainer got the case and went to put the screw in old case(why, had the thread hole drilled a little bigger) and I heard 2 little bounces on counter to never to be seen again. Now I have 2 cases without screws so how you ever lost and found is amazing. Now guessing the screws are similar is there a specific section in a store where they would be found? We have a Fleet Farm (if you've ever heard of) that carries a lot of stuff but I would never start to guess what name to use to even start looking for name wise. I'm guessing really really small screws isn't a section.
  13. I would look for a 3-4oz oil tan. Can get them cheap and how stiff or soft you want it. Are you hand sewing it or machine?
  14. I'm sure you're aware of the cheap punches on Ebay with about 20 of them for 10-11 bucks. I've seen a quite a few people use them and they look like they work decent and they're the only ones I've seen in that size.https://www.ebay.com/itm/195387135606?hash=item2d7dfb1676:g:3QMAAOSwB~5jOAiE&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4EIYqIsHjzbe7w1LgRYtp0LNVTBs8xxedjvS7EXfa2RYdm5g%2FWGLRv1HrRRk6UrqnZYHZsrTrTvYmU0%2FZocYKG8TtSmoLtxGDRgzFIsot8MqkvnwcvfHInrKN6PqolaRyjo3%2FtZcEfKf7CaUZE2DJTR4KEhEAd3R4Tbe7XhZd%2FFJ4j9y5CIC12wep6PJfs15QnK22Zs1MNIrIk8wZsPaTzgvar5nYPvzPdQnkGEKLgSdtdjZ7gPK2Rv8NP6dzhUl3dsuaoN4taQZ%2B3pDmBFO7YVPY48hqOZxdtAy1CdJ5huv|tkp%3ABk9SR8C8rIOcYQ https://www.ebay.com/itm/185631744481?hash=item2b3883a1e1:g:kZwAAOSwo~Rgbog6&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4NKdMaJi0U7uhGVE0Mju8UQaiwUbh4Yn%2BCIUcm9E4KGD0cEf%2BrMb0XZHYzGztHrfcdu0q1bK6cyruZEuDyodEoh7%2FSCg33yxOhF6xanY3UICTWT%2FHmAOjzph8nYTDsEFDC32rbIT6toNKI5CN4OJoEXzwBOFp0MqIStfB4idJqZs4qb%2FOA%2Bphpe5dsmfC%2F3UqcxI5h7QTA79OYYrN60SeHJoqzj8cwY9EjqGI060Yx6Tia9pm88N%2F8%2F3DakN1LYIAztE6oK4vebxh2cAIBOEimXkebstwWA9CFPpuY1TctB1|tkp%3ABk9SR8S8rIOcYQ https://www.ebay.com/itm/353689905261?hash=item52598fa86d:g:ohEAAOSwhNthTZr7&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4FR8vwOjo1V6xvO0mJ%2B1b1uD0L4JRNB2ehVuMOMHumB7Vl6kUeaGOtOg0k7E0Uhu7YpZMtoa1aHiqXh1wPhUfdSWfc0wW0STOFL%2BI81%2FAS1obwuvHi33KZAyz8morTu%2FCALjagxDkA3kVZH1G6EubhxwVR2%2FLzcYOwWxqEmBtXqmfpd3aJxLEjlH2xMunhjijcBkVImp7%2BMLrun9hopVjzKIMx2vNS6FHBMEOfC3H6bw%2FTEHs0NYtqzvD%2FLDyIyliMQHPGo5nYe5k33LoKrYJNJ6J%2FgI1EdzKgvMvaD6U9uO|tkp%3ABk9SR4KK1IOcYQ
  15. I have one and you can look at in 2 ways, if you know how sewing machines work it might be easier, or if you don't you will by the time you get it to work. When they say they need adjustments is a understatement, the biggest thing I had was the filing and polishing. A lot of the parts come with almost a soot kind of coating that ain't fun to polish off but its got to go if you have any chance at getting it to work. It took me weeks not days and about equal time watching videos on timing and tuning. Bought mine off Ebay for 80.00 and use the 135x16 (or the standard home sewing) needles which are available and cheap. I use 207 top thread and 138 on bobbin (they are little). Sewing a straight line is damn near impossible and would I trust one enough on anything for anyone, doubt it. It did its job half assed most of the time because you have 2 choices, high presser foot pressure and leave marks or it slips and scratches what you're sewing. So do I still have mine, yup, do I use it, rarely. Got sick of wrecking pieces and having to re-do so I bought a 441 clone. Hope this tells you what your getting. Knowing now would I do it again, if based completely on finances, yeah. I am now questioning the last sentence after writing it.
  16. You have to first justify do you/or are going to make enough of what ever you make needing one to equal the cost. Of coarse in this addiction/hobby it never does. Depending on size/width of what you're going to skive can you do it with a splitter doing the ends/edges. Or there is the tried and true safety skivers which are cheap and the blades are cheap that in cases just dampen to make it easier.
  17. A list of what you have, prices and if you're willing to ship and to U.S. or worldwide. Leather people are always looking for more tolls and the such.
  18. The 135x16 are the leather needles as @kggsaid that cut the leather vs just piercing it will leave a better hole for the stitch to lay.
  19. Do you know where as in online, office supplies, kitchen or the arts and craft depts?
  20. Is it something you can get at the big box stores or do you order at building stores, online ect.?
  21. It's like the only guarantee to get a package is with a signature but you'd swear they go out of their way to make sure you're not there. Couldn't tell you how many times the USPS had signature deliveries and I'd watch the driver go to mailbox and drive away leaving a note in the mailbox saying sorry we missed you, you can pick up your package at the post office. After a few conversations with the head honcho at the post office they actually started bringing them to the house.
