Colored background and antiquing don’t seem to work well together! The lighter the color the more it will effect it, antiquing is made to get into the low areas like background, decorative cuts, etc. I have never tried using antique over light dyed or painted background but can certainly see why it wouldn’t work.

I use pro dye with RTC finish and have never had any dye run problems as long as it has dried overnight. I also use it as a resist with antique paste or hi-liter from fiebings with no problems with wiping it on. I use fairly light coats, I don’t spray anything so I can’t advise you there.

That looks good, BUT If I saw someone wearing that coming toward me I wouldn’t know whether to run or pull my gun! You probably wouldn’t have any problem with social distancing while wearing it! lol

Simple Dual Layered Belt

Very nice! I am sure he will love it! -
From what I see you are doing good, carving should be about 1/3 to 1/2 the depth of the leather. Just keep practicing the swivel knife and beveling is the most important thing to get down pat so just keep practicing . When you get tired of practicing then practice some more. I really like the fish! Enjoy your new found hobby, it can be a lifetime hobby as I have been doing it about 60 years!

Are you just stamping or are you carving also? A picture off the work after dying would be helpful!

Save your money and buy a nice swivel knife! For the money a Barry King is a very good choice! About $60 with blade of your choice, I would recommend a 3/8” barrel with a 1/4” straight blade but to each his own. Call Barry Kings and see which they recommend or which they sell the most of. Best of luck in your carving adventures, I’ve enjoyed leather work for almost 60 years so needless to say it’s a lifelong adventure. Enjoy, Rodney

I would use a light coat of olive oil, then let dry overnight prior to using. That should very slightly darken and give a good patina!
-
Looks nice the way it is but I would have to lightly oil! That’s just me

I am sure it could be but be careful, I have a Ken Onion and it works pretty good on pocket knives, butcher knives etc. but I have never tried it on a round knife, it may be hard to get and keep the right angle.

Very nice! That is a whole lot of hand stitching! -
I use Barry’s bar grounders on a fairly regular basis and yes the larger are a lot easier to use I would recommend trying size 35 or larger depending on what you are doing. Use the largest dot one you can to start just go side by side with the leather on the dry side, you can fan it around also. Just takes some practice like all carving and stamping. Hope this helps. I would get 35-5, 35-3 and maybe a 35-7 for larger area. Enjoy Rodney

Beautiful work! Not criticizing but wondering if on the Ruger it appears to be awful top heavy, or that it could easily fall out of the holster if the loop wasn’t on the hammer! Just curious! -
Nice! Welcome aboard, lots of nice folks here with tons of knowledge to share, enjoy. Rodney

I use a Cowboy 3200 with usually 277 or 207 top and bottom. I usually line my belts which most are 10 to 14 oz total.

Welcome aboard, lots of good folks here with tons of experience and knowledge! If you are close to Springfield, Spring field leather would be a good place to see, touch and buy. People there are very knowledgeable and can also point you in the right direction. Rodney
