That is a nice and well thought case.

Searching for a natural, stiff material
doubleh replied to SeaCitadel's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
My only experience with pigskin is with gloves. The are very soft and comfortable but wear out quickly. I would think the softness would be a problem using it for dividers. -
Great knife sheath. It's rattlesnake country where I live but l haven't stumbled on to one in several years and the last was a tiny one with one button, not even big enough for a hat band, so it got to live. We have been in drouth conditions for over 20 years here and all the wild life has suffered and I suppose snakes are included. I wear cowboy hats and have wanted a rattlesnake skin hat band for years but never having found the right size in the wild and being too cheap to purchase a skin and certainly a ready made one I am still without.

Nice belt but I would call it stamped, not tooled. Guess I'm too old for modern speak. Being one of those behind the times Americans I don't do metric measure very well either. I can figure it out though I would rather not.

Although I have no interest in making something like this I agree with chuck about how to do it.

My 'new' old stitching horse . So versatile!
doubleh replied to SUP's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
It does it's job very well. I would imaging it was cutting edge technology when it was invented. I still don't enjoy hand stitching when making something. It's just work that has to be done. The rest of the project is enjoyable though. I especially like to do floral tooling.- 17 replies

Nice work. Another "no" to rivets on holsters and knife sheaths. I line any holster I make but it's all stitched.

Relaxing and satisfying? I spent many an hour straddling one of those things on Saturdays working for the local bootmaker/shoe/saddle/tack repairman many years ago. Really anything that was made of leather got fixed there and my job was mostly hand stitching tack and saddles that couldn't be machine done. I can only describe it as work and not fulfilling work either. Just dull, dreary stitch after stitch work. I detested sewing cantle rolls back on saddles after a padded seat repair. Of course you can't stick a saddle in a sewing horse. I had to bend over those.- 17 replies

New sheath for friends knife
doubleh replied to DaveP's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
No rivets in knife sheaths or pistol holsters for me. Nice work on the replacement. -
Looks good to me.

Belts, Pouches, Sheaths, Cases. Lots of stuff.
doubleh replied to AlexOstacchini's topic in Show Off!!
Excellent work IMO. I would have refused the laced belt remembering how much I hated doing just a wallet known as a billfold back when I did them. -
Weeeellll, if it is large enough-----oh, forget it. I didn't say anything.

Nice work although even with some Irish ancestors I have never been able to warm up to the color green except on plants. My problem, not yours.

Sand it just like a piece of wood. Use finer and finer grits until you are satisfied and then apply resoline. It will fuzz up some so sand it down again and reapply. It will never be as smooth as lined will though.

Leather is cold in winter unless lined with something and hot in summer in any form.

Not this grandparent. I learned old math. Nice vest by the way although I cannot understand why anyone would want to wear one. To me it's the most useless piece of apparel ever dreamed up.

Looks good except I wonder about the closure. It looks a little fiddly although it should stay shut under most conditions. I would have probably just used a snap.

Nice and I agree about the sewing but it's an easy fix. Although It isn't my "thing" you did a great job on the two toning.

Even at $150 you are working for basically McDonald burger flipper wages. Not much for something that requires some skills and why I quit doing anything but hobby leatherwork.

Nice work for a good looking kid. Two of my great grand daughters have taken up the guitar. If they stick with it awhile I'll make them both a fancy strap.

Cute. She should like it.
