Thanks, its even smaller than my patch knife lol. Thank you for the inspiration friend.

I dont know if the curved edge would be better or not i know mine will cut saddle in one pass coming or going lol and i do know that purdy polish helps. Did you look close at what 30 bucks buys you? basically about a 10 to 20 minute grind to about 400 grit and a quick heat treatment. didn't even polish off the carbon black. It would take some work to get one of those in respectable condition imo.

Thanks Bert

Thank you. Those are "killa" for sure beautiful work you defenetly need to put that knowledge into some leather tools much more satisfying than buying the crap they sell nowadays.

Thanks its a piece of off cut 1095 from other projects. That piece of brass is out of a prison lock ironically called a blade also, I salvaged a few or them when they wore out and had to be replaced i have one left lol.

I have scraps from knife making also. Hags got me thinking about how to use them also. So i made this kneck nife , kneck knife, neck nife lol. Fun weekend project. 4 oz , bison brown, French twist stitch. the knife 2" blade 41/2" approx overall with Deer antler . Hammered brass pommel because the piece of brass was to small lol. What was so interesting is i got to try a few new things both in knife making and leather without having to worry about the outcome, after all they are just scraps right.

it looks awesome as other have said its as good or better than the original and heads above the other repro's. other folks have the same pics as you to look at so they wont be able to tell of any difference between the two.

when i was a kid my mom had a friend that had love and hate tattooed on her hands just like that. Always wondered what the meaning was to her.

the big contracts may get the best from the tanneries before the vendors get it, car companies for example. and yes it happens every day with all products. They are called called contracts for a reason they guarantee the products.
-
my opine is that the best quality goes to the best contract customers. and with the shortage of good hides the craftsmen are stuck with what's left over. simple as that.

Interesting i haven't noticed that but maybe they are trying to explain that they are not hole punches, chisels aren't for punching holes they are for cutting slots. hole punches are round and for punching holes. lol Most of what we do on the forum is answer questions about tools that the tool companies don't . in our high tech world there has been a real disconnect with modern man and his understanding of hand tools.

lacing chisel left stitching chisel right. both from Tandy and both work as well as any.
-
you need a stitching chisel or pricking chisel for use with sewing awls. believe Tsunkasapa. Also consider this, using a one prong stitching chisel wont be any different than just using an awl in the first place except it will take you twice as long.

thank you

is this some kind of secret project? short answer yes you can stretch leather. If your doing a seat cover for example it may stay or it may just compress the foam underneath. If you are making something that wont have tension applied then it may stay stretched or it may go back to original. if its for clothing of some such then it will stretch to form and function to a point. No one can tell you if that piece will stretch to do what you want because we don't know what you want to do with it.

your video rocks!!! i finally found it. i think it works on the same logic, its adds some room for the leather to flex instead of compressing against the blade. I'm an old guy with flip phone so I don't do videos lol. maybe i can get my son to help me out. you know i was just thinking if a guy were o cut a piece of 4" pvc in half and slide it under his leather so he was cutting on top of a convex surface it would work pretty good for long straight cuts, i'm gonna try it .

Always have it behind the blade not in front lol. Leather laying on a flat surface compresses the fibers into the blade, my guess is because cows are round not flat, causing drag when one side is lifted or even let hang over a table edge for example abates the issue.
